The ride is great...there's actually a front suspension again!

Now it's time for the rear springs and shocks all around. Going to wait another couple of weekends for that project, though.

You reused the old U-bolts?!? It is my understanding that U-bolts stretch (as all bolts do, but...) and should not be reused.

I ordered new u-bolts from Ford. They gave me square-bend u-bolts, but my Excursion uses "semi-round bend" u-bolts. I had no other option at the time other than to reuse them. They were visibly in good shape (no rust or rusted threads), so it as a judgement call I had to make.

I have new ones for the rear but need to get the correct part number for the fronts. I'll take care of this when I install the rear add-a-leaf in the next month or so.

What about the rears? What did you do for them? Are you using the "B" code ones?

I have not done anything to the rear springs, yet. I have a set of rear add-a-leafs that I will be installing and will be keeping the existing rear leaf springs.

Are these the only springs that will work or will any front springs off of a super duty work. I have a set of front springs that I can get but they do not match the seriel numbers that you printed in the article. They came off the front of a 2004 ford super duty pk.

Did they add any noticeable lift to the front or better ride quality? The springs that I can get are stamped 3C34 ADA R 314 3, the springs in the article were stamped 3C34 ADA R 249 6. Just trying to figure out what I have before I go to all the trouble installing them for nothing. Thanx..

bspikes ,do you still have access to the SuperDuty the springs came off of as thats the easiest way to determine the spring code.

Thank you very much for the info. It turns out that the springs are V-code springs. What a find huh. I got them for free. They came off the truck with only 400 miles on them and have been stored in a garage since. Again, thank you very much.

i like the info on springs and the procedure step by step is very helpful

i just bought a ford x
it needs a suspension

if im correct the oem spring were rated for 1750 lbs of capacity , and the v code are rated at 2250 lbs each.

together the pair will give 1000lbs more capacity in the front.
1000lbs more capacity should be very noticable .

cheers !

I was looking at the spring codes on the super duty website. Why did you choose V code springs and not the W or X code which are reported to be heavier?

I would think that the springs are ok when loaded but when empty, the truck rides like on steel wheels.

I have a 05 4x4 diesel X with a 3" lift which I like the height. If I install
the v code springs will I get an addition 1 1/2" of lift over what I have ?

Jim,

The V-codes provide a lift over a stock suspension. If you already have a 3" lift installed, then this would drop the height of your X in the front.

I own a 2004 Excursion Eddie Bauer 6.0L diesel and have the same problem with my front end leaf springs. Will these V-code springs fit my truck? And what happens to the rear of the truck? Does the truck sit higher in the back now? Do they have a similar Ford product for the rear? I have been looking for aftermarket suspension products that do not lift the truck too high, but give me less of that trucky type ride. Thoughts?

Thanks,

Keith

I own a 2004 Excursion Eddie Bauer 6.0L diesel, and wanted to know if these springs will work on my truck? Waht happens to the rear, does it need to be lifted? What about the F-Code springs for the rear Excursion, part #'s? My truck rides too trucky , will these springs changes help?

Once you install the new V-code springs on the front, and truck grows 1 1/2" higher. What do you do with the rear? I heard you can buy new larger 3 1/2" blocks for the rear to level the truck out. What is the part number for the new and longer U-blots for the rear?

I did this swap yesterday on my 02 Excursion. It was very simple and took 2.5 hrs. and I would guess 45 minutes of that was cleaning snow off to find the bolts and mopping the shop floor.

I pre-read your directions as I had never worked on this truck before. I did buy new U-bolts and nuts for an 02 Excursion just to be safe. Thanks for the tip.

I did not have any issues removing the front leaf spring bolts though. I did not remove the corner supports or any of the bumper brackets.
There is a rubber air dam that I removed the retainer for then pushed it up out of the way. Then removed the small support bracket for the AC condenser. Then the bolt comes right out. The hardest part of the whole job is getting that retainer for the rubber air dam back in. Also, The front leaf spring bolts did require a long ratchet with a 2 ft. extension to get them off just like you said. Also, I hit them with penetrating oil first but it didn't help much. I did one side at a time and lubed the front end while I had it in the air.

I started at 3:30 and was done at 6:00 including mopping the floor for at least 30 -45 minutes as a lot of snow was melting off the underside of the vehicle.

Rides very nice, the harshness from hitting the bump stops is completely gone. Now the front is 1/2 inch lower than the rear. I am thinking of doing the rears next just because..... Thanks for the tips.

What type of springs did you do for the rear? Did you post somewhere for the rear install? Lastly, did you use ex or 250 shocks for the rear? Nice job on the front spring install. If you happen to read this send me an email if you have any info on this install wj.knight@yahoo.com
Thanks for all the help.

Did my fronts on my 02 ex. All I can say is without a step by step I don't think I would have been very happy. It took a little longer than I expected doing this by myself.......... getting the springs to seat to the axle was a challenge and I ended up putting the rear driver side bolt in from the back side since it took a little prying with one hand and the drive shaft was in the way when I finally had things lined up. The ride to work was noticably smoother. Not sure how I rode around with the front the way it was for so long. Next weekend the rear springs.

I spent a lot of time on this project figuring out the best way to do this as I didn't have a set of instructions to go by. I find I waste the most time go back and forth to grab tools and dealing with seized bolts. (Also, stopping to take pictures adds a lot to the timeframe)

For a question above, I installed F-codes for the rear springs. I highly recommend this. I didn't document this because I had the work done by a local spring shop, but found this member's photos and instructions the most helpful: http://www.supermotors.net/registry/6660/57634-2 The main thing was having to reuse one of the leafs from the original rear springs.

V-Code fronts + F-Code rears make all the difference in the world. Way better than stock.

I have a 2000 4x4 Excursion with 214,000 miles, and I broke the front passenger side main leaf under braking. I held the broken leaf away from the tire withe a clamp and made a 150 plus mile trip back home towing my 35' car trailer (4000lbs empty ). Although I don't recommend driving it like this we did make it home. I ordered the new spring and U bolts. I received the square U bolts also (and on a Friday when I could not do anything about it until Monday).
So I thought I would add to this thread a little info about the square U bolts. The Excursions where made with the square U bolts until 8/99. If your truck was made after that date you will need the rounded style of U bolts. The date of origin for your truck can be found on the same sticker as the spring codes in the drivers door jam.
If you call Ford and order them they will look up a 2000 in the catalog and you will get the square set. Unless your parts guy is savvy and looks deeper that is.

Hi, I have a 2000 Ford Excursion V10 with factory springs with an awesome bumper from http://www.southtexasoutfitters.com/ and a Warn winch.

I'm looking at an X code upgrade to accommodate the extra weight of the bumper.

Based on this page http://m.ford-trucks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=288505, I think I'm looking for these parts:

(2) 2C3Z-5310-AF Springs @ $154.32 ea
(4) F81Z-5705-ZA U-Bolts @ $15.88 ea
( N805480-S426 Nut @ $1.86 ea

Anyone happen to confirm that's the part # for the springs they used on a 2000 V10 Excursion to replace the front springs?

Regards,

anyone ever put on front air bags instead of replacing the springs?
It is about the same cost, and to save the aggravation of bolts and such I have thought about the Air-lift front bags.

Hi, I have a 2003 Limited Ex, 4WD, 6.0L.

Thanks for the tutorial, very helpful. I was able to swap the passenger side leaf spring with no issues. On the driver side, I ran in to the issue where the aft spring bolt wouldn\\'t come out because the drive shaft was is the way. I was able to jack the truck up and get the bolt out. My question is ... how in the heck did you guys get this bolt back in the same way it came out? Or did you flip it and put the bolt towards the frame? Does it matter?

Thanks in advance,
George
