I have a 2000 "X" with 159k miles on it. It runs and drives like brand new except for a chattering noise coming from the rear axle differential when turning corners. I believe this to be due to the posi unit clutches locking up. I drained diff. and replaced with synthetic fluid and an additive vehicles with positive traction units, but still get this noise.
It doesnt always do it and when it does, it goes away 5-10 ft after going straight.... If you can give me some insite it would be greatly appreciated
I know this is an old post. this board is really dead these days.
It may be time for a rearend rebuild. You might wanna pull the cover and inspect everything inside. I've heard of failures due to bolts coming loose that began with chattering in turns and mistaken for worn clutches or lack of friction modifier.
I have the same chatter, too. Best way to describe it is that it feels like how it does when front tires rub at full lock (if you run larger tires)...except that it comes from the rearend.
I've chalked it up as time for a rearend rebuild myself...just turned over 200,000 miles on my X this month.
