Hello fellow Excursionites!, My name is Vudu, I'm a proud new owner of a new a 2000 V10 EX, and i have a bunch of questions about owning "The King of The Road". First, is all the after market stuff i read in earlier posts,i.e. fuel saver chips, shocks, sway bars, etc. Will someone please point me in the right direction, as far as SPECIFIC replacements for my truck. Sway Bar - Go to JC Whitney this weekend and get a Hellwig 7643 bar for about $165. They're having a big sale!

Shocks. Bilstiens or Ranchos seem to be favorites But many forget that a shock test was done a few years back with the Excursion being the test mule. The Monroe Reflex (new name) was rated very high.

PCM tuner - Head over the 5-Star Tuning ( www.5startuning.com ) to get a custom tune fro your truck. If you're gonna spend the money don't get a canned tune. Mike (owner) owns a number of V10s and has a HUGE following. His prices are extremely competitive.

Question: Since i'm an Excursion Virgin,( just took delivery of a 2000 Limited on 6/1/09) i have a few questions about a certain type of rattling noise coming from the front side passenger area, when i drive over rock un-even pavement, almost sounds like a tambourine. Could that be the transfer box? or something related to it. I'll head back to the dealer soon to see what it could be. Any ideas anyone? Also, i'm only getting 400 miles on a full tank, i want to increase my mpg to as much as possible, i've read on a number of posts, that some guys boost their mpg to get about 700 miles on a full tank, you know about 15-19 miles a gallon, someone inform me on the proper mods i need. Please be specific THANKS.

Hey Vudu--Welcome! Rattles---lets just say They can drive you nuts if you are like me. I don't know about transfer cases, etc but body wise--here goes. Check your rubber door stops at the bottom of the doors. I found mine did not touch at all. When you hit a hard enough bump, the door rattles. You can open the back door and with the front door closed look down where the front closes and you can see if it touches the door frame or not. I used felt adhesive furniture pads to build up the area where it will touch.

Lubricate(dress) your weatherstripping. I use a thick tire silicone as it lasts a long time. It's amazing how many plastic squeaks you get rid of. I bought McGuire's dressing----DON'T! It made it squeak worse.

There is a body mount under the driver and passenger floorboards. These can go bad and sound like metal banging against the frame.

Once, I had an annoying rattle that turned out to be the glove compartment door. A piece of weatherstripping to the inside of the door cured that one.

If you need to check inside your doors to pull the panel off--pop up the window and lock switch panel on the arm rest--just pull it up. There is one screw underneath it. The other screw is under the lower door red reflector light. A small flat blade screwdriver will pop it out--remove the screw. The entire door panel lifts up and off. Ford came up with the good idea to hook the panel on instead of those freaking plastic attachments.

Mileage---drive downhill a lot. A cold air induction install and a Hypertech reprogrammer gave me about 1 mpg or so more but it's got a lot more pep. Monsta's idea of a custom tune is the best. He knows these things inside and out. If you go to 5W30 oil like I use--you will lose 1 mpg--which was the point of 5W20. I don't like lightweight oils for a big engine.

Helwig anti-sway bar--a must!

Our member Landyot makes radius rods to stabilize the rear axle--no more jumping directions when you hit a bump. Search the articles on here and contact him. This was my #1 mod--It's the best!!

Good luck!

A number of things can cause that rattle. Could be a swaybar busing or shock bushing. Could be a bad hub, as well. Checking inside the doors ain't a bad idea either!

You'll never get 15-19 average with your v10 Excursion without MAJOR changes to its weight and aerodynamics. I've not ever noticed a MPG difference between 5W-20 and 5W-30 using Ford's semi-synth...

Yeah I asked the service manager of the Ford dealership here and they went to 5W20 simply for gas mileage. I told him WD 40 in the crankcase did not make me feel too secure. According to my "lie meter", I lost 1 mpg when I changed to 5w30--not that it means anything as I will continue to do so. Not to worry, we can all drop in one of those 400 hp 500 ft-lbs E85 engines that get 100 mpge

I'm REALLY PISSED! My EX had a secret that did'nt show up on any diagnoses. The story is, i had to use my 4X4 low to go through a flooded intersection, (some BOZO hit a fire hydrant) and when i switched it off, it stayed on. Called a mechanic friend, tried to make it work but to no avail. The Ex would'nt excell past 35 mph, at like 3000 rpms!!! Tranny would'nt change gears, try and make turns, it would hop and skip. Just a HOT mess! So i called my dealership, after a local Ford dealer diagnosed the problem as a transfer case issue, i need a 4X4 motor replacement. Parts and labor $850.00 Mind you, i got Behemoth June 1st, 2009, so yes i'm pissed, 30 days later she's in the shop.
