Drivetrain: Stock - C6 trans ( code U ), 2.75:1 9" non-locking rear ( code 8 )
Notes: I took a chance and bought it on eBay in December 2002. It turned out to be a good buy. The body is solid with only a little rust that needs to be cleaned up. Underside and frame are clean. The engine is tired but still runs well. I just picked up a second engine which is a factory 4 bbl. The plan is to install that one while I build up the original. Body and interior work are done as time, parts, and money are available. Everything depends on available funds. Please feel free to make a donation or remember me in your will.

Wheelcovers are from a 1970 T-bird, I believe. Thanks, Grampa, for stashing them away in the garage.

After the new ignition was installed, I went for a road test. I heard new noises coming from the front end on the way home. The noise turned out to be worn out ball joints and tie rod ends. Since I won't do this kind of work, I will have to pay through the nose to have it done.

06/03/04Modification158000Upgraded ignition
I had lots of trouble with knocking and pinging. After trying colder plugs, retarding timing, mid-grade and premium gas, and gas additives, I decided to rip out the old points ignition. I did not want to spend $300+ on an aftermarket ignition, though. I heard that the mid '70's Ford trucks still used the FE block and had duraspark solid state ignition. I got a distributor and control module from a local discount auto parts store for about $115 including $30 i had to pay for the core. I did the conversion in about 3 hours and it fired up on the first try. No more pinging and I can run regular gas.

05/01/04Repair157000Choke cable
I bought the car with a carburetor that had a manual choke but no choke cable. It was fun opening the hood, setting the choke, starting the car, then getting out again to reset the choke once it was warm. I put a cable in last year, but it wasn't strong enough to push the choke back to the open position. Today, I got fed up and tried some silicone lube with graphite in it. I shot some in both ends of the cable and then on the choke linkage. Everything moves more freely now and works ok.

10/25/03Modification156000New wheelcovers
I was cleaning out the garage when I came across a set of 1970 Thinderbird wheelcovers that my Dad had saved. They were from my Grandfather's garage. Dad got them when my Grandparents cleared out and moved to Florida in the '70's. They have kind of a magnum 500 look to them with a 5 spoke pattern and have holes so chrome lugnuts poke through. There was a set of lugnuts in the box, but several had rusted under the chrome jacket and were no good. Even though I had to buy a few lugnuts, but now the car looks more sporty, and I didn't have to spend big bucks on new wheels.
