							| Hey guys, going up to tallahassee tomorrow. Roughly 460 miles there, i'll be doing 75-80 mph on the way there for about 6 hours. I know my car reads 2300 RPM while going 80 mph. I have an 06 CVPI, just wondering if thats normal. I only ask because I had a bad experience with my first car, a 3.8L V6 1992 Mercury sable, i blew the tranny doing 80 mph for 3 hours from orlando. i know the speedometer reading up to only 85 mph might have had soemthing to do with this. Thanks guys. | |

							| Your RPM at a specific speed depends on engine design, transmission gearing, and rear-end gearing. The rpm range you said is about correct for the CVPI.
I've run a 1.6L inline 4 at 6000RPM for 6 hours straight with no problems. I've also run 302 CI V-8 at 7000 rpms for 7 hours (with dual-tanks). At both times, these vehicles were traveling between 65-70 MPH. Tells a lot about rear-end gearing. My wife's Hyundai will turn 3150 RPM at 75 MPH, and we do this regularly on trips for 5 to 6 hours at a time between pit stops.

A lot has to do with the way the power curve of the engine is designed for. I suspect you already had transmission problems with the Sable before it blew. I've blown a rebuilt trans within 100 miles of the rebuild. I blew out the pump, which you can never really test when you rebuild a transmission.
