Wife says i can get another car for myself...... My choice will be crown vic.... Not sure if this is place to post this, but hoping to get some insight as to what i should be looking for or watching out for.....whats ideal set ups to look for...... My budget will probably be around 4k and looking on autotrader or CL......TIA for any and all help |

I would be looking for a late model civilian LX model. Police cars idle a lot so much more wear on the engine for the equivalent mileage. The mechanical components last a long time and there are plenty of affordable used parts available. So the most important part is a rust free body. You might also consider the Mercury Grand Marquis or Lincoln Town car. Presently driving 150,000 mile 1993 Ford Crown Victoria LX during the winter season. In storage for the balance of the year...1999 Mercury Grand Marquis LS 51,000 MILES. |

If you are looking for cheap, the P71(P7B) is the #1 choice as most sell for less than half of what a "civilian" model sells for. Until 2006, the police model did not come with an idle meter so nobody really "cared" about idle hours. According to Ford, 1 hour of idle time on their meter is equal to 33 miles of driving, you can add idle to mileage and get some crazy "high mileage" on a used 2006-11 police car.
In general, they are all the same mechanically.
If you are looking for comfort, go with a former rental or LX model car. All of the suspension parts can be swapped between them and you can have firmer shocks put on a "civilian" model, many like the combo of LX springs with police shocks for a firmer ride.
2009+ are all fleet cars so they will be either former police or rental or "other" fleet cars which generally have good maintenance records. |

Personally I'd get a used police vehicle. You can be more confident about it's history, particularly it's maintenance records. The money you save should easily cover any maintenance it would need. It comes with and oil cooler and a transmission cooler. I would look for a car with a factory limited slip differential. They are safer, more predictable, and more fun (Better acceleration and handling). Only thing I would avoid like the plague are patrol cars. The all white or whatever the primary color of your local jurisdiction is. These cars will have many idle hours, and possibly are never given a break (Cop uses it for 8 hour shift, go back to the station to go home. Another cop takes the car for 8 hours.) These cars will have holes in the roof from the light-bar, and you will see high wear on things like the door handles and armrests (smooth spots), driver's seat (smooth spots and/or holes, springs shot, honestly if buying one just replace the drivers seat with a new one, it will feel like a brand new car), things like that. What you want is a Dick's/Detective/Supervisor's car. A car that only one person drivers and they take it home with them. Not as many idle hours as a patrol car, and since it is used by one person they usually take care of it as if it was their own. These would be similar to undercover cars (any and every color OTHER than white, and have roofs with less holes than the patrol cars), but less wear and tear in the interior. Also supervisors almost never transport purps, detectives don't do it as much as patrol officers, and even when then do its less likely they used it as a bathroom or hid evidence in it. |
