I am working on a 1995 Mercury transmission (4R70W) that I just replaced.
Before the 1995 transmission shifted into first and then second and then third was essentially neutral, engine revved and no power to the wheel.
After the new 2004 transmission is installed I have the same effect....
It shifts into first and then second and then third was essentially neutral, engine revved and no power to the wheel.

That tells me that both of my trannys are fine but the computer controlling it is not working.
Do any of you guys have a fix?

PS. thank you guys for this forum.
When I got into the tranny swap I saw the wire harness pins were different
I went to the web abd found this forum and the re-pinning my harness thread was verry helpful to me.

Sorry I don't have an answer to your question but I must say you are remarkably calm for a guy who just replaced a tranny for no reason at all. I'd be pissed!!!

I guess I am all in on this car. After my initial test drive the car shifted just fine. Then 6 hours after replacing the first tranny, I hit a stinking deer. The tranny started acting up as noted above after the deer strike. I took the car to the shop and the quoted 1200.00 to repair it. I took the money and ran down to Milwaukee and bought another geriatric blue Grand Marquis for 800.00 same color so I will fix my front end AND get the grill and panel behind the grill fixed. Before I scrap the car, anyone need some oddball parts?

Here are a few comments that I have received from different sources concerning my post.
I find it fascinating how the modern marvel of an auto tranny works.

I have been in the design cycle for a few consumer products in my day (aircraft, watercraft, motorcycles and snowblowers) and I am amazed at the auto transmission. Makes me want to convert my Grand marquis to a manual based on the K.I.S.S. theory.

I have received the following comments (below)....
When 4R70W Transmission is in 2nd the forward and Intermediate clutches are applied, when third gear is commanded the direct clutch also applies. In third gear all three clutches are applied but the intermediate clutch is overrunning, If the direct clutch never applied for third gear the transmission would stay in 2nd and would not neutral.

When 4th gear is commanded the forward releases and the OD band applies, if the od fails to apply the transmission will neutral, it is very unlikely the transmission is going into a neutral condition when 3rd gear is commanded.

If the direct clutch has failed the transmission will slip through third and neutral in 4th but will not (cannot) neutral in 3rd.

If shift solenoid 2 failed to turn on the transmission would remain in 2nd when 3rd gear was commanded then go back to 1st when 4TH was commanded. If the PCM failed to control solenoid B correctly no 3rd & 4th could be the result.
The direct clutch can be evaluated by cancelling OD and the transmission is expected to shift from 1st to 2nd and to 3rd , if the direct clutch were slipping it would be noticed by a slipping 3rd
Gear.

If third gear is obtained then reactivate OD (4th) by using the od button again. When the (od off) lamp is not illuminated 4th gear should be expected and if the transmission slips & engine free wheels the band is slipping.

The OD servo and band are used for 4TH and engine braking in M-2, to verify if the band operates in m-2 road test the vehicle up to 50 mph then pull the shifter to M-2 and engine braking should be felt if the band were operating correctly.
