I've thought about getting rid of Hoss-I get pretty aggravated that stuff's wrong and I can't fix it, but I don't think I ever could get rid of it. It would replace my Ranger as my daily driver. |

The only way to really learn is to try to fix it yourself when stuff does break/wear out, or at least get some buddies to help you figure it out. Most of the stuff on Hoss should be bolt on bolt off stuff too, unless you get into totally rebuilding the engine/tranny.
I learned a lot about my XJ by doing all the stuff we just did, course Josh now knows more about my T-Case than I do ... cept how to put the linkage on ....
Unfortunately, big, old trucks are gonna break stuff. Getting one that is newer might mean less stuff to replace right away, but new stuff is a lot harder to wrench on, and like the saying goes "They don't make em like they used too".
As long as you have a DD to get you around you can take as long as you want to fix stuff too.
Oh and Josh, it wouldn't be stepping down. He drives a Ford

yeah patrick i'll back you up this one even though I have been working on cars since i was bout 13 or 14 i swore that when i started driving and shit broke i would bring it to a mechanic b/c i never wanted to learn how to do more than basic maintenance but 2 moths after i go my first car i piggy backed a connecting rod bearing and had to learn how to do engine overhalls immediately which then turned into an obsession with speed and horsepowerwhich led to drag racting which led to off roading. it's mostly a scare factor, working on cars is not that hard most parts do what their name says and once you get over the fear of taking something apart and not being able to get it back together you should be able to fix anything on your truck

Yeah ... I usually tend to think of cars the same way I do computers... they are just like Legos, but a little more expensive
heck I learned 90% of my computer & auto stuff by just diving in....
