You got a 4.0L, right?? Natorious for tapping. Mine taps noticiably when you first start it (has since I bought it)....when that nice thick 20W 50 hits em it calms em down a bit. The 4.OL almost sounds like a diesel. I think its the lifters......go under the hood and grab the throttle. If it does it at idle but doesn't increase in loudness and frequency when you juice it, its probably fine. If it does, I'd say its a valve. All I can come up without actualy listening to it.

yeah 4.0L
it actually goes away with revs. it comes and goes as far as idle is concerned.. but is DEFINITELY louder after a good hwy drive.. but then the oil is nice and thinned out from the heat by then too.
im going to be in br soon. maybe we can meet up and i can give you a listen.
in the mean im going to switch to a heavier oil 10w 30 is in there now.

I run 20/50 in mine as well... It keeps the heat down a little to.. That would be my suggestion...

Good luck..

yeah but our small blocks tend to handle 20w50 a little better especially with the summer heat than these smaller motors

got the oil changed.. still tapping

its worse though.. now it taps all the time.. even with while im driving.. and sometimes loud enough where i can hear it when im driving. its changed from a light tap to a diesel like "clack."

it sounds like its related to only one cylendar.. when its idling it just goes "tap, tap, tap, tap, tap"
then i start going it turns to a more shallow "bzzzzzz" almost like a baseball card in the spokes sound.

when its not in gear, its louder.. but if im in P and i rev it good, it stops momentarily but will start again after it settles down. when im in gear though and driving, it will tap all the time regardless of revs.

stuck lifter?

Check your oil pressure and make sure it is high enough. Then You should try a higher viscosity oil like a straight 30 weight or a straight 40 weight and see if it stops then. if you are running a 10w-30 or a 10w-40 it is still a 10 weight oil and it is still may not be thick enough to stop a tap. The tap might be caused from a lifter or a loose rocker arm. I just had a tap last week, it wound up being a bent push rod and a loose rocker arm.

sounds kinda like a connecting rod bearing going bad. gives the rod just a little room to make the tapping.

pressure stays steady at 45.

if its the con rod bearing thats pretty serious wouldnt you say? fairly unusual for it to go bad at 54k...

what can i do to fix a stuck lifter or loose rocker arm

try adding some marvel mystery oil in place of some of your current oil
