my engine just started ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-tapping!
its odd.. when you start it up, it sounds more like a knock.. but is relatively quiet and goes away with revs.. after a drive on the hwy, it changes to a loud tap. most noticeable when idling and parked. when you engage any gear, it quiets down but is still there.
engine runs fine. no hint of a stall.. oil pressure is about 15 when idle 45 steady on the hwy.
no funny smells. no squeaks.. just tap tap tap tap tap tap.
any suggestions?
the engine light randomly goes on and off as well.

Kris: light tappity tap. but loud.

i didnt think it was that high.
the water didnt even touch the bottom of the jeep
wouldnt it start tapping sooner? if that were the case.
i'll change the oil anyway i guess.

does it get faster with rpms? Do jeeps have a timing chain or a belt? If the chain is stretched it can slap the sides. |

Josh> no funny smells. I think id smell it if the exhaust was leakin. ?
Brett> actually the tapping goes away with rpms and engine load. when im driving at all over about 15 or 20 mph it doesnt even tap. im only at 54k miles.. so if my timing chain is stretching now i'll be pissed.
Josh T> about to roll 54k
Patrick> i was playing around in the water during the rainy season last week.. pseudo-fording my way to burger king. thats about when i NOTICED the tapping.. i dont know if thats when it started though. it wasnt loud at all, and actually went away completely the next day... then it started again.. and went away.. now its back with a vengeance.
anyway, the water wasnt that high. i know it wasnt standing high enough to submerge the bottom of my engine.. but i was doin alot of splish splashin.
also.. thanks for the search.. but none of those timing chain related symptoms sound like me.
which is good. lol
