Yes i am looking into a mini spool for the 8.8, the reason i'm looking at this route is because i can take it out in the future and then put it back in if i so decide. I could just weld the spiders, but i would have to buy a new carrier (i have trac lock now) so if i buy a new carrier i'm looking at just buying a mini at the same time. I'm not looking for a "oh on don't do that" i'm just looking at your opinions as to why you would do it or why you wouldn't. Jeff i would like for you to chip in cause your welded. how is driving in the rain? I'm seriously contemplating it and i'm looking at ordering it within the next few days

Back when I was considering the 8.8 I was planning on welding.. I have riden in Jeffs rig as well as Driven it.. IT really doesnt feel that much different than mine.. If you give it to much gas it will break loose but you just have to be carefull.. The mini spool is pretty cheap for an 8.8 isnt it??
I think I found a mini spool for the dana 44 for $90 or in that range anyway.. Good luck..
Oh by the way.. With the 4.0 the weld or mini would both be a good alternative.. Virtually indestructable..

No problem in the rain just don't get jiggy with it going around corners, it will break loose easier. But once your used to it you won't really notice it that much. The biggest downfall is faster rear tire wear and decreased turning radius in tight turns like parking in a tight spot. The welded rear tends to push you into the spot without turning as much as before but I am used to now so it doesn't really bother me. I would be a little concerned about the strength of the axle on the road because a welded rear will stress the axles more but my Dana44 did fine with a 6000lb truck and 33's. You might want to check with someone that has done this on an 8.8 with 36's like you have. I don't know much about the 8.8 or its weaknesses but if it is not a full floating axle and you break a shaft or C clip if you have them then that would be a major disaster !!! Like losing a wheel on the freeway!!!
That being said, I will never spend another dollar on a locker. I will weld every trail 4x4 I ever own front and rear and just add hydro assist to deal with the steering issues. But I'm just crazy like that Oh yeah, Reggie , Pirate4x4 has tons of info about doing hydro assist on your truck... |

As far as the 8.8 goes, its 31 splined and i believe the shafts are the same diameter, if not slightly larger than the D44, but it is C-clip
Carl the 8.8 mini is like $99
D44 ring gear 8.5"
8.8 ring gear 8.8"
D44 shaft 1.30" (smallest point)
8.8 shaft 1.32" (at the smallest point)
D44 pinion diam 1.375" (30 sp)
8.8 inion diam 1.625 (30 sp)
D44 approx strength 4982 ft.lbs
8.8 approx strength 6200+ ft.lbs
