My picks for the Fourwheeler 2002 Top Truck Challenge:
These aren't in order of preference, and the number is the one listed in the magazine article, April 2002.
#7 '83 Chevy Blazer 8th Place
#9 '86 Ford Bronco
#13 '72 Toyota FJ-40 6th Place
#15 '72 GMC Jimmy
#18 '89 Nissan Patrol GQ
#26 Ford Ranger - It's a Bronco II, I'm sure of it!
#27 '72 Ford Bronco
#36 '89 Jeep Wrangler
#53 '78 IH Scout 9th Place
#60 Dodge RamCharger
Apparently not everybody agrees with me. Instead they picked a bunch of narrow-purpose built rigs that did well in some areas, but totally flopped in others. The Fat City Bronco really ripped it up though.
Notes:
I'm a big fan of safari-style built vehicles. I'm about to get a redneck quality safari roof rack and sand tracks from the junk yard, as well as a hi-lift, and shovel. I figure on stopping at 33s or so for this rig, maybe 35s. Bigger tires can wait for a rock crawling rig.
I finally went out and bought the roof rack. It's taking some work, but I should have a pretty cool rack for under $100. The sand tracks weren't for sale! The shovel, though should be included in the final price, and maybe some perimeter lights, but I wouldn't bet on it. I'm saving for a Shelf-It first, so I have a better place to mount the CB, Switch Console, Fire Extinguisher, and other safety gear. In the not too distant future, the rack will hold sand tracks and a hi-lift.
Update:The rack sucked. It looked horrible, and killed my ailing engine. Took 20mph off the top speed and 6.5mpg away with the rack on. Good grief. I've decided to learn how to pack stuff inside instead.
The 4.0L will be more serviceable compartment space wise than a 5.0, and an easier swap. The 5.0 can go in my future crawlin' rig, with extra space provided by a tube chassis with fiberglass fenders and hood.
Check out my Wish List album for the Isuzu embodiment of my basic wish list.
Future stuff:
2 Big Sticker!!!
Sway bar disconnects - tried it. They need to go.
Shelfit - Still want it, hopefully get one soon
Brush guard to mount/protect lights
Lights - Probably Hella ...WHoa... LightForce!
...
Mechanical Man 200A alternator so I can run more than one pair of lights!
BC Broncos spring rockers
2-3" Front lift
Ranch 9000 shocks w/ Dual Controller
...
Axles, lockers, tires, wheels, about 6" lift
Cutout flares
Roof rack tent - www.roveraccessories.com/hannibal2.htm
These are cool, but my tent works fine on the ground.
Custom bumpers - Bull bar style front, All-Pro Style rear
All-Pro style appears to be illegal in WA.
Rocker guards - Still debating on this one
New seats - www.corbeau.com/brochure/gts2.html
Safari stuff - spare gas tanks, pull-pal, snorkle, "wading kit"
Multi mount winch, prob. HS9000 I like the 9.5ti winch.
GPS - Will have this soon!
That should be good for five or ten years! |
