the 98-02 Conti floor shifter
It is pretty much identical to the 2001 LX Sport, Marauder and LSE shifter units but with some metal mounting tabs on the front
It's also ~1/2" taller!
|
|
|
For Comparison: 03-04 Mercury Marauder Shifter
Same as 01up LX Sport/LSE, but with dot matrix style trim and no chrome
Notice, the shifter is virtually the same as the Continental shifter but ~1/2" shorter. The most noticeable difference is that it lacks the metal bracing on the front like the Continental does.

What I started out with.
A black, dirty console
Follwoing lots of cleaning, I painted it to match the factory Willow Green using custom mixed PPG Interior paint.

THe donor car was equipped with optional cell phone system

|
|
The filthy storage bin, note the felt lining found on the earlier 98-02 models.
Yes, I scrubbed it out of course.
the hole in the front is due to a cd changer install. I covered the hole when I mounted my subwoofer's remote bass level control there. It is a very convenient location for it to boot!

The shifter bezel surround.
Notice the damage.
I refnished it prior to install with a lightly textured black paint for a factory look

The stock shifter cable removed, floating above the brake pedal awaiting re-routing

The grommet where the shifter cable needs to be rerouted through.
It is above and to the right of the accel pedal. THe lines you see running through it are vac lines for the parking brake release and HVAC, so take car around them!

THe hole.
THis is where the shifter cable used to go.
I used a 1-5/8" iirc black rubber tapered plug from lowes to fill it. Works great! And is great for routing wires for future projects!

The stock shifter cable, rerouted and floating on the new shifter.
I used a ton of nylon locking 'zip' ties to secure it down. The shifter is bolted down using carriage bolts, and sealed with RTV.
In retrospect, some socket head cap bolts would have looked hella better.

Later on:
I later relocated the scan gauge into the console, and trimmed the old ashtray/cupholder door for a perfect fit filler piece

Cupholders?
Many have asked if I still have cupholders now. Well, yes! The console features a pair of trik retracting cupholders
