After some work with the dremel from the BACK SIDE, I made a square opening for the fuel door release solenoid to slide through. I used some self-tapping screws into the platic to secure it.
You will need to remove the fuel cap to fit it in/out. I stretched a rubber glove over the openign to prevent debris from entering the tank while the cap was off

Removing the door panel will uncover the factory fuel door wiring clipped to the plug.
If you're lucky, you can pry out the plug from the top, and the wiring will come out with it - without having to pull the door panel.
If not, you can pop out the trunk release from the top and try to fish the fuel door switch connector out the hole, or just remove the panel:

A close up of the mounting tabs used on both the fuel and trunk door release switches. It is a very thin plastic.
