I'm considering purchasing a new 5.4 X 4x4. I'm really upside down in my current truck so the dealer is "eager" to sell me the 5.4 and give me a "good deal." I have two concerns:

1. Will the 5.4 have enough power to do the job? I currently have an F-150 with the 5.4 and I am very pleased. I don't tow much (2,500 pound boat) -- will the 5.4 w/ the 4.10 in the X do a decent job?

2. Should I expect mileage comporable to the 6.8 or worse?

Also, is the tranny in the 5.4 version the same as the tranny in the 6.8? I'd worry a little if it is the same tranny in my 2000 lb. less F-150.

Thanks for the help and advice!

I would look for a V10 if you are going to want a gasoline engine. While I have no experience driving a 5.4L Excursion, I do have experience driving a 5.4L F150 and to have a couple thousand more pounds wrapped around that engine tells me that it'll be a dog.

Mileage will be similar to the V10...not a big enough difference like the diesel makes when compared to a gas engine.

All X's share the same tranny.

I would look for a V10. This is the biggest vehicle on the road, it deserves a big engine, too.

BTW, welcome to the site!

I have had my 02 X 5.4 engine for about 10 months now. I bought the 5.4 for several reasons. Reason one is my wife would be driving it mostly and it would be local city driving(was told the 5.4 would get better gas mileage in city). Another reason was the only V10 I could find at the time was $10,000 more than the 5.4. A couple of other reasons but not related to the engine. When I loaded up the X the first few times with family kids luggage I thought it handled the hills very well, we have alot of hills in San Diego. But I love having a truck that you hear before you see . So I installed a K&M intake with a bullet exhaust system. I now have more power but it is hard to keep the gas mileage down . I am very pleased with my X, but I was at the dealer the other day looking at the new X's and I say 2 limited 4x4 V10 for the same price that I paid. I have hauled with my X (carcarrer) and it has done fine but I think I would have gone with the V10. My wife found out about the 2 4X4 on the lot and her first words where lets trade it in for one. And don't worry about the gas mileage, it does'nt

All I can say is I had a 2001 Ford F250 4x4 Extended Cab with the 5.4. and it was a dog.. You will be penny wise and pound foolish if you purchase the Excursion with the 5.4, it is too much vehicle for that engine. You will get killed on the price when you trade it in. The dealer is willing to DEAL for a reason. It is very hard to sell a Excursion with the 5.4. BEWARE...

I love my Excursion with the V10. Plenty of power.

By the way I took a real bath when I traded the F250..

Thanks for all of your advice! This seems like a great site for honest information. I sure appreciate it.

As for the X... Well, I'm so upside down that we'll have to see just what they mean by a "deal." If I do get the X I'll sure know where to come for info.

Thanks again!

Well... I bought the X with the 5.4. The dealer really did give me a good deal on my trade and the sale price of the vehicle. I've driven it 500 miles so far and I have no complaints.

OK. I now have a brand new 2003 X. What do all of you suggest as upgrades and/or initial changes or investments I ought to make with this vehicle (other than getting a V10 to swap )? I've read a few suggestions from guys buying used (shocks, etc.) -- how about new?

Thanks for your help and welcome to the site. I'm looking forward to the info I can get here.

Here are a few suggestions:

- Hellwig Rear Anti-Sway bar (about $125) unless your '03 came with one
- New shocks (I like Rancho RS9000's, other people can chime in with their preferences on shocks)
- Exhaust and air filter modifications are usually the first step on a gasser for improved performance and mileage...it all comes down to your budget!

Enjoy the new X and

I Like This Idea

Just kidding, I would also start with the exhaust, K&N air filter, then the hellwig sway bar(I still need one).

Good luck and Welcome!!

If you got an extended warranty with your purchase, just be aware that the K&N filter will void your warranty. I'm not knocking the K&N, just don't want you to lose your $$$.
