I am looking into a performance chip for my 7.3, any suggestions or experience with a certain manufacturer? |

I'll let others chime in to let you know what they're using. There several different options...it all depends what you do with your X (towing, cruising, etc).
My Hypermax chip is considered a "hot" chip and it more or less requires a larger downpipe and exhaust system. My chip is rated for 300HP and 700 ft-lbs of torque. Whether it actually produces that is another story, but my X gets up and moves.

Which Hypermax chip did your customer(s) have? They make two -- a 300HP and a 330 HP. Curious to find out which.

I forget what the factory 4R100 is rated to but too much HP/TQ can be a boom boom effect on the tranny Ya'll know that Superchips has their new Micro-tuner out It has the Tow Safe Performance Program at 70 horsepower and 150 lb/ft of torque, the Performance Program at 90 horsepower and 175 lb/ft of torque and the High Performance Program which does 110 horsepower and 200 lbs/ft of torque, they are going for like $300 delivered 2nd day air. We been running with the SuperChips MicroTuner in our 2002 Excursion for almost a year now with the 80HP program and if someone asks us if they should try it I'd tell em they'll have an ear to ear grin once they take it on the road for a burn BILL

anytime you up the horsepower in a dieasel you must address the transmission. the first thing that will go is the torque converter. the rest will follow shortly. you need a big converter and a TransGo shift kit to start. chip makers like to lower voltage to the electronic pressure control solenoid and get you by, but thats a band aid. there are other things out there like Diablo valve, Sonnax Tri-cumalator; more band aids. they are all designed to raise pressure and no more. a properly built 4R100 or E4OD will hold just about anything you throw at it. same with a Dodge 47RE, or the GM Allison(which is the absolute best of the bunch) the new 5R110 from Ford is nothing but a 4R100 with an extra gear, same stupid torque converter and a whole new shit load of problems.
Eric
i tested the Hypermax 300 chip and wupped it.(but remember i have the small TTS chip. soon as i get time we are doing the exhaust and big chip. if you ever want to see whose the fastest, next time you go to a show, go back after show is over. there is always drag racing in the parking lots and those guys know who makes the most power. its fun to watch.

I will probably go to the dyno and see what the numbers are. It will no doubt put my Galaxie to shame which means money will have to be spent to make the 'Gal faster.

Eric
there is no break-in on the torque converter. there will be a break-in after shift kit is installed. by the time you drive home it should be done.
