My transmission crapped out on me today. 87,000 miles -- will let you know what happened so you can keep an eye out for it if you plan on upgrading your tranny to handle your towing/driving habits. No smoke, no burned fluid, just no working gears!! Time to pull the Galaxie out of the garage again...VARRROOOOOOOOOOOOMMM

Well, just installed a suncoast torque converter and transmission along with a trans cooler from the V10 ford(larger). Tranny seems solid, torque converter doesnt seem to want to lock up, hopefully its a break in thing as it has probably only seen about 15 take offs. But I drove it 90 miles on freeway. I hope the torque converter gets better on take offs,............its a flat out dog right now. But it seems to do real well when in gear and on the highway, no slippage at all and very sold shifts. Lets hope this torque converter tightens up.

you better make sure you are going to lock-up. best way to tell is; get the rig going at 50mph, hold it steady and then with your left foot (remember hold it at 50) touch the brake pedal and watch the tach. RPMs must increase by about 200. you will feel the difference. if it does not scan it right away. who installed this trans? procedure is to clear all codes and road test. check for codes after road test. i run a data stream on every road test( scanner hooked up, and watch every command computer makes and see if trans responds.) i wont let a truck out untill i beat it (no abuse) and watch the data. i try and put the truck through anything my costomer may demand from it. you cant pussyfoot around the block and tell this person "hook up your load dude, its ready" call Joe Webb at Suncoast and he will handle it.

It does great over 2k RPM's, but it's a major dog off the line. I cleared all the codes once and started from scratch. Still get the same lack of launch off the line. The only way to get any decent off the line is to engage my highest setting on my performance chip. As for checking the lock-up, do you mean to say if I apply brake at 50mph that the RPM's should increase by 200? and this is because it is unlocking I take it? Buddy who runs a custom 4x4 shop installed it, but he is a chevy guy and doesnt dabble with ford often. Installed a new neutral switch and rear speed sensor with the tranny swap as to eliminate any trouble shooting in the future. I guess I am just wondering if the torque converter requires a break in period or if I definitely have an electrical issue to sort out. There really isnt much to screw up with the install, its simpler then just about any manual with clutch swap. What did disappoint me is the inner seal on the transmission where the torque converter inserts into was installed improperly from Suncoast. The spring around the seal had popped off and we had to perform some voodoo to repair it. Would have thought that would be caught before being shipped out. Oh well, will get it scanned tomorrow and hope to find an easy fix.

From my discussions with Mike (gearman), he mentioned that his Suncoast was a dog off the line as well but performed quite well on the highway. Perhaps yours is working flawlessly and this is just what it's like.

For the few hundred miles I ran an aftermarket torque converter in my trans before the trans failed, it was a similar experience. I didn't feel like I lost a ton off the line but I really had to get on it to make it move like it used to, but it was worth the tradeoff with a converter that engaged lockup sooner. The stock Ford converter behind a chipped PSD (at least with my Hypermax chip that doesn't have any trans provisions) is a recipe for disaster.

I have my Hypermax chip out now and am running a stock PSD. I'm holding out for a couple thousand miles just to see how my new trans will hold up...don't want to risk Ford voiding my warranty again. Not sure if I'll go with a milder chip or what. The PSD in stock form is definitely a dog.

Ha! Feels good to be missed.

Two words: Moving sucks.

Pretty much unpacked and in the swing of things again. My garage needs a workbench and some shelves, otherwise things are good. The X takes up way more room than I had anticipated, but it fits with room to spare so I am a happy camper.
