Do the aftermarket intakes really make a difference in performance/mileage

I believe they make a difference if you upgrade exhaust and install a chip. by itself i dont think it will help at all. if i only had one mod i could do, it would be exhaust. chip would be next, intake would be last.

I installed a K&N FIPK last night and intend on putting a cat back system on soon, there are no other modifications. I immediately noticed that the response was much better. It's a little to soon to tell much more but I'll report back good or bad.

1st report on the K&N. I just filled up today and was averaging 7.5 to 9 around town. I calculated 9.6 today including the hour I spent the first night "testing" it. We'll see, maybe a fluke.

I have been involved in a 10V mod. on a 99 F250. We did the trans with shift kit, Everything else was Banks as per costomers request (headers, exhaust, computer chip, trans command). So far we have dumped the trans command, power is better but pinging has become a worse problem than when it was stock. The truck has 3.73 gears (i suggested 4.11 before any mods and was shot down by costomer). The first mod we did was K&N filter charger kit and noticed more noise but no change in mileage or power. It sounded more powerfull, but it wasn't. I stand by my statement; gears is the best mod for gas. Exhaust is next. I make these statements because i have put KN on all my trucks for years because it was a habit. No longer. It will also void your warranty if you have one.

Gearman,
I'm not quite sure I understand your position. If you could elaborate please.

"The first mod we did was K&N filter charger kit and noticed more noise but no change in mileage or power. It sounded more powerfull, but it wasn't." Was this proven with a dyno or opinion?

" I make these statements because i have put KN on all my trucks for years because it was a habit. No longer. It will also void your warranty if you have one." Are you saying a K&N FIPK wil void your warranty but headers, exhaust, computer chip, trans command mods won't ?
Wouldn't things like this be covered under the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act ? (Depending on the issue of course)

I'm trying to learn, and the next mod I was going to do was a Gibson cat back. Please enlighten me and save me from wasting some money that could be put to much better use (like a vacation).
I was also about to pop on a $1500.00 Ford warranty too (even a better vacation)

Thanks,

Mike

Mike and Jody Plassa
The remarks i made on the V10 was seat of the pants when i installed the K&N. I feel that i am able to feel real gains because i have done this so many times. Some people will say bull, thats fine. Gas motors that are naturaly asperated are designed to handle only a limited amount of intake air. You can open up the intake all you want, but it can only use so much( kinda like us). Engines that are supercharged or diesels can benefit from more intake air. I have dynoed many hotrods that i have built and learned from it. I believe (from a lot of trial and error on a dyno) that if you install a free flowing intake, you must open the exhaust, and get a custom chip burned, not a generic fits all. I dont believe you will gain much with the store bought chip through the internet. As far as losing your warranty because of the K&N, i threw that in (you are correct in stating that it doesnt matter after the other mods) because i have seen Ford dealers deny warranty because they said too much oil off the K&N hurt the Mass Airflow Sensor and killed the motor.
Now i will state this; dont let me ruin your fun, i will still try things that i haven't tried before even if someone that i respect tells me not to. This is part of hotrodding and it is fun. I make my comments to help people with good solid info, and tell them what works and what doesnt. I have been surprised a few times. So, do what you want and have fun with your wonderfull truck, and if i can help, you know where to find me.

regards, mike

Mike,
Thanks for the input, I respect your opinion. I am one of those people who investigates things until all of the fun is gone. When I find what I believe is the best product, I install it , investigate it some more only to find out I should have gone a different direction. Well I thought I had a plan but now I'm back to square one. Maybe I'll change the shocks., that seems safe.

Thanks again,

Mike

We made this V10 run better. It cost a lot of money, (chip, headers, exhaust, intake and trans). The gears in this '99 F250 are 3.73. I suggested he go with 4.30's before anything was done. He is now going with 4.30's.
Mike, dont stop what you are doing,(fun) just dont spend too much.
