Ok,
on the other diesel forum someone mentioned takling the muffler off and mentioned better mileage...

Since I planned on an exhaust system as the next mod, I thought I'd double check his statement.

Pulled the muffler, pur a straight pipe in it's place and got a 'pretty' chrome tip for the factory tailpipe...

Sound was not TOO LOUD, but definetly LOUDER....

Did it two days ago and although I haven't run enough fuel thru it to measure manually...
the overhead that went from 16/19 city/hiway before flash, down to 11-13/16 now reads about 16 around town

The wife approved the sound, and I approve ANY increase in mileage !

Going on a 1K round trip this week - wil measure manually and let you know if it's just another case of Ford's 'new math' and it's incompetent computer skills

Gosh, thanks for recalling this... was wondering how long it's been !!!
I didn't notice a BIG change in the mpg, but the EGT's are down...
But after this amount of time, I've decided to get a cat back system - the rumble is nice for a bit, but it's just TOO loud in the Ex when on LONG trips....
@ 85+ mph on cruise for 6 hours, it gets tiresome...
Even though FORD took the pilot injection away and made the motor louder, I still want to ease back on the tailpipe noise some...

I wanted to get your input on if straight piping your X removed the load HMMM at 1800 RPM.
Did your ever have this problem with your 2003 X? If so, did removing the muffer help? I know the straight pipe is louder but does it scream at 1800RPM? Some of us thought maybe the stock exhaut was the the problem.

Cheers

Actualy, I can't say that I had the drone at that rpm...
Maybe I didn't notice it - I can tune things out - just ask my wife
maybe I never drove at that speed - I usually drive rather fast, even around town,
but I rarely hear the engine other than at idle due to the exhaust tone ...

I can say that the egt's are down,
the weight is down - the muffler is HUGE !
is there any performance gain - cant say - didn't do any before and after timing ...
but it's a cheap mod and logically should allow things to flow smoother...

I would recomend a cat back system though unless you are going to get a mandre bend muffler delete pipe that will allow the flow to be smoth out the tailpipe... just my $.0000002
