The console on my 02 NEVER varies more than a 1/10th mpg NO MATTER WHAT I do !!! What an absolutely worthless piece of s**t !!! How about the rest of you - COMMENTS?????
The compass, otoh is wonderful and has saved my *ss many times over.
ANOTHER COMPLAINT: WHY doesn't FORD put a stainless steel exhaust system on a FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLAR VEHICLE ?????? The bean-counting scum should be crucified!! All it took was ONE trip to New York in the past winter and the whole thing is RUST CITY !!!!! I am NOT HAPPY and can't believe this CHEAP CR*P !!!! COMMENTS?????
EVEN ANOTHER COMPLAINT: Man, I am miserable today!! It's great having the FUEL FILTER so readily accessible BUT, whrer does the drain off go??? I can't see how you're supposed to "catch" it as it drains. The fuel falls into the black abyss of V-land!!!! This can't be good for the block or gaskets!! What I do now is not drain the bowl, open the top and use a syringe to suck out the fuel, take out old filter, wipe out the bowl totally dry, replace filter, fill bowl with ATF or Marvel oil and "close her up- COMMENTS??
HEY FORD- how about a $2.00 hose from the drain around the engine and down to the chassis??? Too big of a profit bite???
Seriously guys- these EXCURSIONS and all the big FORD trucks are UNGODLY EXPENSIVE and we work too damned hard for our money. I am NOT HAPPY with FORD's response to problems and the STUPID, CHEAPSKATE corner-cutting they do!!!
Even the USELESS TRANNY GAUGE - nothing more than a glorified IDIOT LIGHT!!! This is an insult to our intelligence.
I also notice WAY TOO MANY of ypu "faithfull" have had TRANNYS explode at UNDER 100,000 miles- ABSOLUTE BULLSH*T !!!!
Her's another BEAUTY- DO ANY OF YOU EVER NOTICE HOW CLOSE THE TILT WHEEL "BAYONET" IS TO YOUR KNEE???? "RECALL, attn: HTSA"?????
Here's the ULTIMATE QUESTION- DOES ANYBODY AT FORD GIVE A DAMN ?????? DO ANY OF HENRY'S BOYS READ THESE POSTS??? OR, are they too busy spending their paychecks???
I am and ALWAYS have been a FORD LOVER !!! BUT, these long sordid problem stories are starting to remind me of HARLEY DAVIDSON during the AMF era!!!!

POSTUS SCRIPTUM: Yeah, I AM pi**ed off!!! But the real reason is I always loved FORD, HARLEY DAVIDSON and American products (OK, so I do have the VW and some foreign bikes) and am enraged at these stupid, easily fixable problems!!!! THANK GOD for guys like Gearman and you other faithful posters- you've been indispensable !!!!!

First and foremost...
I've awoken on the wrong side of the bed too.... but ...
if you're so unhappy with your truck, if it's wearing on yout THAT bad, it's well past time to get out of it...even at a loss it would be beneficial to your health...
After all, it's just a truck, not worth having a stroke over....
Granted,
they cost 'a lot' to some of us, and then there's the rare few that this is just chump change...
Not me, by the way,
but I still like our Ex and I love my wife and I want us to win if we ever get in an accident, so I drive the beast...

Maybe Ford did hear from a lot of folks like you and *that's* why they're killing off the Excursion, LOL.
I've never owned a car or truck yet that couldn't improved upon and that, I guess, is one of the reasons for this site.

Umm. 
Is that all you could find wrong with the X?
No modern vehicles take maintenance into account when the design process. Engineers are not mechanics. Nor do they take into account service.
Trannys die. Computerized trannies die even quicker. Due to incorrect readings from vehicle sensors the vehicle can basically kill its own tranny by loading up at improper times. Old mechanically engaged (vaccuum) lasted longer but did not offer 4 speed overdrive with full-lockup converter. I expect to put a new tranny into any large 4x4 I have ever owned. Its just part of the deal.
Rust is innevitable, get a better exhaust. If you bought the X in New York most likely they would have reccomended a undercoating to prevent rust.
Get a real transtemp gauge so can have some say in when your tranny dies.
The simple reason why the "X" costs more money is because of its limited production. Had Ford been able to forecast as many sales of the X as the Explorer the X would be 33k at a dealer. However, production costs outweigh overall sales revenue making the vehicle more expensive to manufacture. You drive a piece of history, not a piece of poop.
Every vehicle has stunningly brilliant designs, and engineering pitfalls. That includes asian, european and American cars.
Be glad your not working on a VW Taureg, or a Lexus SC400. Or changing spark plugs in a 5.4 triton. And, no. Good luck,

press the two buttons at the same time and reset it. That's what I had to do to get mine going and it's worked ever since. 'Not sure how accurate it is, however.

My computer has read 10.4 mpg NO MATTER WHAT since the day we took delivery (I average 7.5 to 8.5 around town). Even after adding mods and having the battery disconnected for hours, even days, I was just complaining about that tonight. By the way, thanks Kevin, that's the first time I heard about holding the buttons down. I'm going to try it tonight. I didn't get an owners manual with ours but I checked with a few dealers and noone suggested that. Regarding the exhaust, I was told it was stainless. It doesn't really matter as a Gibson is going on soon. I do agree Ford should do a little better with their issues. I almost passed out when I climbed under our expedition for the first time and found the oil filter in an accessible location. Anyway we love our X and wish they weren't discontinuing them. |

I like the compass in the overhead console. The mileage computer says i'm getting 24.1 mpg

The mileage indicator is just that,..........an indicator not testament. I have found it to be generous but consistantly so. If you add a chip chances are the mileage indicator will be really off. Thats why I keep a couple receipts and write my mileage so I can compute my average consumption on my own, dont need a computer for that.
As for the fuel filter bowl drain,.........mine does real good and is easy to do while changing my oil. Just crank the draincock open and down it goes to my drain pan, no big deal. So perhaps there is a hose missing on your drain to direct the fuel in the right direction, just remember you will have to have the filter lid loose before cracking the drain open, otherwise it will not drain properly at all.
As for any other complaints, wait until you get around 100k and have to change wheel bearing assemblies, its not a matter of if, its a matter of when. And how about the drifting from the front end, it could be fixed by having a standard taper style wheel bearing, but because of the pressed sealed assembly you get just a tad of wandering. Dynatrac makes a correction kit for the 4x4 X's to the tune of $1500, but man does it steer straight after that.
Not trying to add too much fuel to the fire, but there is more to gripe about if you want a gripe list,.........or you could look at other vehicles out there and they have plenty of gripes to be had. All in all I like my X and it will stay as long as possible. If you can own a Harley (current day models included) and be happy with it, you sure are overlooking ALOT of gripes from totally inadequate brakes to outdated suspensions and technology not too mention the price????? American or not its just insane the "perceived" value. Youre getting a much better value with your Ford money.

Now I'm gonna loose some face  . While we were out today I told Jody (my wife) about not being able to reset the computer, WOW do I have a red A#@. She politely advised me that I shouldn't have held the reset butons so long and promptly showed me how to reset the mileage computer.
Damn does that hurt  . Next I'll be riding on the back of the CBR>>>>>>>>>>>>>>  |

I also have an 02 EX and if you press the left button the computer cycles through fuel mileage to miles left to go on remaining fuel. If in the mileage mode, you hold down both buttons the computger will reset. It then gives instant mileage and after a few moments it shows the "average mileage". If you hold the two buttons down again it starts all over again. On the flat and level I get 24mpg. Downhill, I get more, much more. Uphill, I get less, of course.  All in all mine works just fine.
