It was brought to my attension that fan belt replacement on our excursions requires disconecting upper radiator hose to remove. I would like to meet the so called engineer that thought up this idea. Look under your hoods folks and see. Be ready for it before it catches you off gaurd. There are earlier models that didnt have this stupid setup. My tow driver has an F350 PSD that doesn't have this. I will be looking into the part #s and post.

Gearman,I have a contribution to fix that problem.

I have the dual alternator upper radiator hose installed on my Excursion,it's a Gates hose #22433 and picked it up for like$10 at O'Reilly Auto Parts.

It'll go around the belt,it's a definite MUST DO!!

Also, pick up a couple of stainless screw clamps to replace those shoddy channel lock clamps Ford provides

Thanks for the answer I hate these little surprises on the road, and i dont like the idea of anyone having to possibly get burned with coolant that might be 250 deg F

The things that I find out that'll make Excursions or Powerstroke engines run better and easier to work I'll gladly share anytime and if anyone's local I'd be just as happy to lend a hand on your Excursion/SuperDuty mods

THANKs CHP Mustang!!!
I just changed my original serpentine belt at 163,000 miles- the hose recommendation was A-#1 and I changed to the Super Duty hose. The belt still looked pretty good, wasn't cracked and never slipped BUT, Gates has TWO belts listed that are 7/10 inch different in length. I installed the shorter one and it works great.
Guess what guys, I still have the original yellow coolant!!!! AND, the inside of the hose was clean as a whistle!!! I can't believe it !! I'm gonna replace the coolant with the yellow from Ford OR what do you guys recommend- Prestone????

Happy Easter to all,
Greg

I just switched to Evans coolant. I also installed a 203-degree thermostat and a new thermostat housing (the original one was corroded and leaking). I also have a remote coolant filter installed. All products purchased from http://www.dieselsite.com . I don't have write-ups done on any of them yet, but here are links to the products:

Evans Coolant - lifetime coolant, no need for additives, no need to run water. converts your cooling system to non-pressurized.

HOLY FREEZEPLUG Pres Eric !!!!! TWENTY SEVEN DOLLARS PER GALLON??????
OUCH!!! Plus- I'll need 9 gallons to fill this monster.
I can't believe the cost but, I understand the principle it works on. I really have to think about it.
Did you spend that much? Did you drill your radiator cap as it says?

Thanks for the forum and the advice.

Eric- do you remember who sold the glow plug "bypass when engine is warm" kit??? What about the hose crossover kit for the fuel rails???

The coolant was not cheap, but I will never have to change it again. Plus, I don't have to use any additive for it like I did with the coolant that came in the 7.3L from the factory.

I did drill the radiator cap. Runs just fine! The water left over in the system does eventually evaporate and you need to top off the radiator every so often. I just did this week. Looks like it's leveling off now. Will check it throughout our trip this weekend.

Don't know about the glow plug bypass kit.

Hose crossover kit for fuel rails -- all I'm familiar with is the oil rail crossover kit sold by Dieselsite. I have that installed, too. I did the coolant, thermostat, and oil crossover mods before I moved to NC. My wife has been driving the X periodically over the last 3 months. Now that I'm going to get the X back and the nice weather is here (i.e. no more blended winter diesel), I'll be able to get a feel for the mileage change (if any).
