wandering if i run higher than 87 octane will it be ok for the v-10 motor, my 2001 seems to run better but i wander if the higher octane will do damage?

Don't do it. Higher octane fuel has a higher flash point. If you start using it regularly, the portion which doesn't burn completely will start to leave deposits inside your combustion chambers. This, in turn, will cause the engine to ping because the deposits will "glow hot" and bring on predetonation (pinging). Then you're in a visious circle ... higher octane to reduce pinging .... more deposits causing pinging .... even higher octane to reduce (on & on & on).

I bought my 2001 used and it only had 10,000 miles on it, now it has 20,000 on it the reason I ask about the higher octane is because the v-10 pings already but only going up hills is there anything i can do?

I disagree with the comment about higher octane causing more heat deposits than lower octane. I see it as just the opposite with a lower refining process of the lower octane fuels. As far as pinging, that seems to be a problem with the Ford V10. Keep changing brands till you find one brand that pings less and stay with it. You will probably not get rid of a V10 ping. If you people listen to these radio automotive experts, take what they say with a grain of salt. My friend (remains nameless) but is known in LosAngeles as motor man was busted a few times by me at the gas station putting in 92 in his Sub, Porsche, and wifes Explorer.He is the biggest advocate of 87 octane on the air. I am not saying 87 is bad, but if you ping, kick it up a notch. (thank you Emiral)

You need octane enough to reduce ping as others have said. Remember higher octane fuel burns slower to the point of the "big Bang" - that is why the spark plugs are fired more degrees before top dead center. Too much octane for your timing is wasted - "Big Bang" after top dead center!

I enjoy every minute behind the wheel of my "Big White Guy". I'm still working to improve the brakes.

Octane is a measurement of resistance to auto-ignition.
Burn rate is an entirely unrelated, independent characteristic.

Race gas, as an example, has high octane and a very fast burn rate so that it can be consumed at high RPM. Anyone who thinks otherwise simply has not done any research - - the data is available from any good fuel supplier.
