The brake controllers we're talking about are electronic devices for actuating (controlling) the electrically-operated brakes found on heavier trailers. Trailers over a certain weight must have their own brakes. Hence, the tow vehicle needs a means to operate those brakes.
Boat trailers use hydraulic systems with an impulse-type master cylnder mounted at the tongue of the trailer .... as the vehicle slows, the forward-pressure of the trailer applies the hydraulic brakes. |

Thanks for the help guys! I received the controller in the mail yesterday and it took ~10 minutes to install - most of which was the time it took to reach said connector under the dash with my large hands. It was right where you guys said it was, though.

I recently bought a prodigy brake controller and the adaptor that is plug and play. The strange part is that when I plug in the controller it is flashing "SH", which shows to mean there is a short in the wiring. This is before I ever connect the trailer. Has anyone else had a simailar problem?

Let me add a big word of caution here. I found that the adapter plug I bought ... the part that gets spliced / soldered / heat-shrunk to the brake controller wiring was mis-identified in regards to wire color. If I blindly followed their directions, I probably would've fried the Prodigy unit. So, before you finalize any connections, make certain you've tested the functionality of each wire ... and this is when a multi-tester / Ohmmeter comes in handy. Another mis-labeled document I found was in the FORD Factory Service manual for the 7-pin trailer receptacle. The manual had most of the wires mis-identified. After I obtained a generic copy of how they're supposed to be wired, I found the X was wired correctly, but the OEM manual was wrong. You may have another adapter that was assembled incorrectly. |
