Hi, new to the diesel world. Everyone on my race team has gotten a diesel powered Ford over the past 2 years. I finally followed along, and so far think Im going to be very pleased. Needed something that can haul a boat effortlessly, get good mileage, get people and equipment into and be comfortable on the fly. Found a 2000 2WD XLT Excursion with all the Limited options on it for a great price with 47000 miles on it. Im still trying to develope a relationship with this thing in how it works, what it can do, and whether it's running/shifting as it should. Seems to have a rather lasy shift from 2-3 and accelerates harder than 2nd when it does hit 3rd and rpm's drop to just under 2K. Anyways, any comments about that and can this behavior be changed abit with this adaptive learning ability with the ECU if I were to zero it out and let it get use to my driving style? Also, there seems to be some useful enhancements to be had with an aftermarket chip and K&N filter. Are any of these available used around here? It's a second hand vehicle, Im thinking try a second hand chip. Im hoping to find a used TTS tow chip from someone jumping up to a 6.0 and doesn't need it anymore. The programming looks real good on this chip for the HP/Q curves I saw published elsewhere. Anyways, thanks for anything anyone has to comment on or offer. |

Congrat Rus...
I presume i's the 7.3L with the 4 speed...
Not sure of the this, but some have reported good results by disconnecting both batteries for about 30 mins then reconnect and drive it like you it's your's - which it is !
You might check into it, but I believe you have a 100kpowertrain warranty on the diesel ...
There are SO many possibilites, but I had good results on my '02 with a Superchips Microtuner... just made the truck MUCH more responsive and seemed to shift much better...
Good Luck with your X... I liked the '02 and really like the '03 !
Great trucks !

Thanks John, appreciate your comments. Yes, it's the 7.3 w/4sp auto and yes, it does have the 100K drivetrain warentee. I don't really think something is wrong with the tranny, more just what it was use to doing with the previous owner and me babying it too much at the moment. LOL The dealer (SW Ford in Weatherford) went through the whole thing and came back flying colors. They said this one was solid, and was bought there, knew the owner and everything kept up with it. I feel I was lucky to run across one like this. On the chip stuff, I got allot to learn, but notice you can get either a add-on chip or, a handhelp programmer it seems from any of these chip mfg's. Im not certain about the diff between the two or advantages between them either, but sounds like they are trying to do the same thing but one lets you go in manually to change codes in the ECU to some predetermined value that they reccommend for getting what you want. Im guessing... Anyways, thanks again John! :-) |

Just FYI... the 100K warranty DOES NOT cover the tranny - just the motor.

Humph...learn something new everyday! Drivetrain in my work means drivetrain, XMSN being part of the drivetrain. Thanks for the clarification Kevin! |

I know. It's pretty silly. I think they actually call it a "Powertrain Warranty". I asked them about it at the Ford Dealer when they were trying to sell me a new TC. Thought it should have been covered under the 100K. Nope... Motor, only. Took the truck ('99 F250) to a tranny shop and had it checked out. It was all fine.

WOW !!! That is a shocker
I never asked because I ASSumed they weren't chainging definitions on us !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Powertrain to me means where power goes thru to the wheels !!!
And, pray tell, how the engine running without anything else makes you move ?!?!

Welcome Russ
Your trans shift sounds normal for a stock trans. Third gear will not pull as hard because the shift into lock-up(converter clutch) comes in on top of the 2 to 3 shift and kinda lugs the truck a little, thats why you see the rpm drop so much. As far as computer relearning; disconnect batterys, turn ignition switch to on and pump brake pedal 5 times ( this will release electricity stored in the capacitors in the ECM (computer). 5 to 10 minutes is enough, then reconnect. The computer will then begin a relearn that might take 500 miles to complete. (Ford computers are slow). When it comes to chips, i like the TTS the best, especialy the one Steve Cole makes for me (has my transmission program). it doesnt lug the truck on the 2 to 3 shift ( keeps the lock-up converter from coming in on top of the shift). I have also found this chip to make more power than the rest.
regards, mike

Well thanks Mike! I was hoping you would run across my post and have something to offer. This chip profile you have from TTS...would you say this may be a good one to use on my rig? Is this a towing profile with some special transmission massaging done for you? If so, how might I order one like it from TTS if I simply go for a brand new chip? BTW, have you ever tryed a fuel additive called TK7. I've been exposed to it for 2 years now around my race team and Im quite impressed by it. Im a hard sell with most any additive, but this one is an exception. I'll also try the re-learn thing and see what happens over time...thanks again! |

The chip is excelent for towing, has three positions; stock, Tow mode (60 hp) Race (110 hp). This chip must come from me. I highly recommend high performance torque converter and TransGo shift kit if you use this chip.
