Landyot,

I see you may be taking orders at the end of the month. I will make a purchase at that time but I have a question...

For those of us without tools and not as mechanically inclined, where do folks go to get these reliably put on?

I live in the Chicago area and welcome advice as to who I should contact to do the install of the radius rods. Has anyone used a Ford dealer's service center?

Thanks!

I doubt a Ford dealer would be willing to put them on because it involves removing factory-installed equipment, and the radius-rods are not "blessed" by Ford ... meaning they are not a Ford-approved accessory.

If you intend to install them yourself, but need someone to do only the torch work, you could get most any muffler shop to make the cuts for you .. just show them where as per the installation instructions. Otherwise, you can take them to most any 4x4 specialty shop, and they should be able to install them. Take a printed copy of the instructions with you, and expect to pay for two hours at their labor rate.

Several folks have used the services of 4x4 shops with both good and sour results. Most results have been positive, but if you read further back in this thread, you may find someone who went and checked torque specifications after their shop-installation, and found the shop had not done a "complete job" (the fasteners were not tightened sufficiently).

I hope this answers your question.

Your best bet is to show the installation info to a buddy who is mechanically adept, and offer to pay him ... either with $$$ or beer or both ... or for some other service worth bartering.

I am blessed to have a local independent mechanic shop here. The two young guys who own it both run stock cars themselves, and are off-road enthusiasts as well. They're really good about doing just about anything (legal) that you ask of them and pay them to do. I've taken a number of parts for my Excursion in and asked them to install them including my Helwig sway bar and LandYOT's radius rods. The instructions that LandYOT includes are excellent, and if your mechanic is competent, you shouldn't have any problems at all.

Thanks for the kind words, Roger. It's that kind of testimonial that makes it all worthwhile for me.

My honey-do list just had an item added. My wife just purchased a 2005 Mustang, and we will take delivery next Wednesday. She wants me to install the GT-style grille & lights. BTW, she makes a little more $$$ than me, and does so in a 4-day work week.

We put a couple For Sale signs on her 2000 E.B. Explorer last weekend. By Wednesday she had a deposit, and the buyer brought a certified check to the house today. The E.B. is gone. So not only is my list getting longer, Mrs. LANDYOT has nothing else to drive but my X. This leaves me with the GT40 to drive, or the KLR650 to ride ... especially now that it's getting warmer.

Speaking of the GT40, I recently acquired a slightly damaged '95 Cadillac Seville, and will transfer its 32V Northstar drivetrain into the GT40. Yet another task for later. I figure that after I pull all the parts & electronics I need for the swap, I can part out the rest of the car for more than I paid for it.

Notices have been e-mailed to those folks asking to be placed on my "contact later" list. I will start production of the radius-rods again at the end of April, 2005.

Guess this means Mrs. Landyot is out of ideas for the "honey-do" list!!!

Ha-ha! That'll never happen, but she is happy for now. The base cabinets, wall cabinets, and deep sink have all been installed in the garage. That will actually benefit me more than her, but she wanted a place for me to wash up before entering the house (doesn't want me to get her sinks dirty inside the house).

I also installed the wiring harness, dashboard switch, GT-style grille and fog lamps on her new V6 Mustang ... which was not entirely a bolt-on job ... required a bit of mechanical-surgery. A local dealer liked my work on her 'Stang, and asked if they could send me customers who want the GT grille and lights installed WITHOUT using the GT bumper cover. The only way the dealer can install them and have 'em covered under warranty is to include the GT bumper cover (about $500 + painting) ... meaning they have to charge about $1,500 for the job, whereas I can do it for about $750 using the standard V6 bumper cover ... but no warranty. And no, I still haven't taken any photos ... sorry.
