Spartan,

Can you give some details on how you fixed the driveshaft unbalance? Did you change u-joints? What was the cost of balancing and who did it?

I want to fix mine and your information would be helpful.

Thanks, Richard from Knoxville, Tn

Spartan,
An update on my "body Booming". I rotated my wheels/tires yesterday(front to back) and torqued the lug nuts equally to 150 ft.lbs. The resonating sound is the same at 50 MPH but is all but eliminated below 80 MPH. About 80 MPH it's there strong but restrained.

The prior time the wheels were off was at the Ford Dealer when I complained about the brakes. Shame on me but I had not checked the torque on the wheel lug nuts after that visit - the dealer mechanics had tightened them maybe to a 100 ft. lbs.

I love my Ex and will get that driveshaft balanced, Richard from Knoxville, Tennessee.

Gosh I'm tired. Been up since 4:00 AM - not my usual wake up call.

If the search engine is working, do one on u-joint angles and you will find my .02 on that. If not here go to the other Ford board for Excursions.

It's not a matter of replacing u-joints. It is a matter of getting them in matching angles so that the orbital revolution of the u-joints conteract each other at both ends of the drive shaft and give you a smooth ride. Obviously you don't want to mess with the transfer case output, so you shim the rear springs with steel shims to make the rear differential u-joint match the front u-joint operating angle. If this does not work then you will have to go with a double carden shaft. The link is somewhere in one of my posts. I can't find it right now.

Lifted trucks never ride like stock trucks. Get it the best you can and move on. Good luck.

I'm having the same problem. My vibration/hum starts at 45 and is terribly loud at 85 mph and higher. The problem started a month after I purchsed the truck brand new. Ford refuses to see the truck anymore until a factory engineer comes to Atlanta. The noise sounds like it is coming from the drivetrain and is worse when I let off of the gas. If I'm going up a hill or really press down on the accelerator the noise disapears. If you take a look at my posts from yesterday at the main Excursion Forum you will see a reply from someone that did get the problem fixed he said the following.
----------- Here is his reply to me from The_X_Family Ken D.--------------
What finally ended my problem was they replaced all the bearings in the rear axle and diff. However they never admitted it was for the vibration in the rear end. but it was to fix a differential chatter that a mechanic felt while on a test ride. I never complaind, heard or felt a chatter. I guess they can save face this way, or keep the statistics on vibration problem lower this way.

I have your exact problem (I think). I have been dealing with a vibration/hum that starts at 45 mph and gets much louder at 85 and above. The problem started a month after I purchsed the truck. The sound is louder if I let off the accelerator. Ford replaced the drive shaft but this did nothing to the sound. I then took my truck to a specialist in Atlanta that balnaces drive shafts. They said my drive shaft was perfect. But, they did notice the vibration. If you will go to the general discussion section at this form you will find about a week ago a talk on this problem. Someone had the same vibration/hum as I did and had their bearings replaced in the rear end and rear axle. This fixed their problem. I'm going to ask Ford to do the same for me. I have a feeling that this is where our problem is (the rear end/axle bearings).

I will take my truck into Ford for the bearing repair in a 2 weeks and I will let everyone know my success.

[quote]Brian,

My 2003 V-10 had the same vibration above 70 to 75 MPH then got louder and louder as the speed increased. I line up the rear axle flange and the flange on the rear end of the driveshaft by tipping the front of the axle housing up.(Took out the misalignment in the U-joint). It took a 1/4 inch shim at the rear of the cast iron spacer above the spring. Runs smooth and quiet up to 82 MPH - haven't gone faster - I am satisfied.

Richard & Everyone with a Excursion Vibration:

Richard, what you said fixed my problem. It took months and a Ford factory rep to drive my vehicle but my vibrations are gone. My truck is smooth as fast as I can get it. It turns out the Pinion Angle was off 3 mm. They inserted a shim which lined up the rear end with the drive shaft. This did the trick.

Thanks everyone that helped.
