i would like to start off with a hello to everyone i am new around here...
I have a 2001 excursion 7.3 powerstroke diesel limited 4x4 with 74,800 miles i have a chip exhaust air filter and shift kit. i was driving my trucktoday and i acclerated off a light (i was driving normal not driving hard) and i noticed that it felt like i was still in 1 st gear and the truck was geting close to redlining and that it would not switch gears so i let off the accelerator and it switched. so i was like huh?? so i drove the truck to my friends house and has 2003 mustang cobra with this diagnostics / chip that is called the predator made by diablo sport well it does diagnostics on all ford models so i tried it on mine and it gave me an error code that said that 3rd gear ratio bad. i aslo went into real time data streaming which tells me so many things and i checked the the gears switching with the predator and it would show the gears shifting from 1st to 2nd but i would not feel them in the car ..... the car would stay in 1st gear... and it will not switch gears untill you let off the gas pedal then it will switch gears! anyone have any input. my guess is the tranny is done . if so what should i buy rebuilt or new and what brand? should i get a transgood shift kit and a torque converter? thanks in advance and sorry fo rthe long post!!! The exact same thing happend to my 99 PSD F250 auto. It was chipped with dual straight pipes for around 30,000 miles driven very hard. Several times when chipped when I'd floor it it would slam into second gear, the hood would bang! One day it was going to bang hard so I let off the pedal. After that time I had to let off the pedal for it to engage into the next gear.
A trip to the Ford dealership and a test drive later the tranny tech. said the truck was going from first gear to third skipping second completely. A Chysler mechanic buddy of mine said not to drive that way to long due to the possibility of cracking the tranny block or even worse possibly cracking the motor block.
I drove the truck that way for about 1,000 miles towing nothing either. Paid $2,000 for a Ford rebuild with 3year 36K warranty and had a buddy put it in for me, took 8 hours to do. Since then no chip, was a diablo sport chip which I've heard is junk.

If you don't want to replace another tranny get a BTS tranny, the best your going to find.

Talk with "Gearman" Mike on this board. He owns a tranny shop and has been dabbling alot with Diesels lately. I went with a Suncoast Tranny and torque converter. It took a little while to break it in, but it definitely handles heavy loads well and has an unlimited mileage 36 month warranty. Highly recommend doing alot of research before just buying any ole rebuild. And whatever you do dont let a Ford dealership touch it, they worry too much about making the tranny run smooth for soccer moms and not the guy who wants the luxury of an SUV but the ability to work it like a truck. I had a Ford Tranny guy test ride my rig after the new torque converter and performance tranny and he insisted it needed a full rebuild. It was quite amuzing to say the least.

So the suncoast is 36 months? I think BTS is 24 months. Wonder what the price difference is?
I guess for an extra year the Suncoast would be the way to go.
What was the Suncoast with the torque convertor then? Was it hard to install compared to the stock tranny?

Before you spend your money, have the computer scanned. You may have a bad RPM sensor on the engine causing this problem. Pay someone to scan it, get a copy of it, post it here and i will tell you what it means. There is no more diagnosing by feel. I roadtest first in my shop, then i scan computer for codes, then i diagnose if possible. Sometimes i need time to put the puzzle together. Things have changed.

Unfortunately you have experienced a problem ford should have taken care of by recall. late 2000 and early 2001 4r100 have a 2nd gear sprag problem, I know this becvause mine died at 28,000 and I went to ford with all the details I could find. Check out TSB 01-13-5. It is described as a "delayed shift or no shift" into 2nd gear. I had to let out of the accelerator to get it to go. Ford actually stepped up and fixed mine, even with the amount of mods I had done, because they know it was junk. They actually pulled a bunch out of vehicles already through the line before they were shipped.

Unfortunately your 36,000 warrenty is up so the info don't do you much good unless you have an extended one.

ken i have trans go shift kit. ed yeah man unfortuneatly yeah it the same problem man i have gone to a couple of different tranny places and it's about $1,000 to 1,300 to rebuild. but my fear is that i rebuild it and it breaks again because i have all those things done to the truck and the tranny wont hold it. so i wanted to know if there is heavy duty shit i can rebuild it with so it wont happen again. thanks ----alex----
