hello everybody. I just joined herre so that ya'll can give me some input. I have a 2002 deisel X, 4wd, stock on the outside.

I'm ready to throw on some aftermarket gear...and was wondering what you guys could help me out with my delema of, "oh dear, wat to buy!"

1) I want tires. I've decided I want some yokahomas. They are a decent price for the quality. I've had bad expirience with BFG's, so I don't want to go there. My question is, how big can i go without running into problems as far rubbing, and binding. PS...keeping stock wheels...um, are they 17's? I think so.

2)want to look at lifts. Need ur opinion on whether I should go body or suspension. I only want to go about 2". Now between my tires and lift, I only have about 5 1/2" to play with. (I want to park it in the garage at night...thats a priority!)

3) exhaust. I was looking at a topic earlier, and somebody was recommending 3 1/2"...something something. ok, exhaust is not my forte! What I'm looking for the most in this upgrade is performance. Then I'll worry about making it loud so that everybody knows that I'm coming. (PS...I want those duramax's to know I'm passing them, this way I can c their faces...)

4) Steps. I don't want to go sidewinders, I don't think. I was thinking nerf bars, something kinda like that...hook me up!

5) ANYTHING ELSE THAT WILL BEEF UP MY STOCK X! i'M FOCUSING MORE FOR OFF ROAD PERFORMANCE, i'LL WORRY ABOUT A POWER CHIP AND TURBO LATER. SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME!

Thank you so much. I wanted to come to fellow owners before I went to some shop where a teenage kid would tell me what he THOUGHT would work...you guys know! Thank you again!

have fun,
DX

DX, I'll answer what I can with my limited knowledge,

I had Good Year 305x70x16's on my '00 w/stock wheels (they are 16 inch not 17) and the truck was stock height, no rubbing or cutting was done, never had a problem and they looked real good in the wheel wells

3.5 exhaust was a topic as someone mentioned having a 4 inch exhaust w/a stock motor was to much, it would work but there was "lag" in regards to the power. i am thinking of going this route also as the truck is a daily driver, will never be off road and I have 86,000 miles to go before hitting 100,000 at which time i'll add a chip!! Eric's experience w/his dealer steered me in this direction

Fried of mine has the '03 F250 and he changed his turbo wheel and exhaist and he loves the difference in the motor, Ford dealer actually did the work so he is OK on the warranty

Hope this helps a little bit

c now, I was a little confused because I thought that the deisels came with 4" exhaust stock factory! But I guess not, I haven'y had a chance to look at the exhaust carefully. What I'm assuming is, is that its 3 1/2 stock. GOT IT! By, the way... I would love to get some prices with these suggestions if possible!

Thank you raymind for your sugg!

have fun,

Gents lets get one thing of my chest!!! It's spelled DIESEL.... moving on.

Okay, Mod are dependant on what you ultimately want to do? My Excursion pampered as much as she is, has been through a slue of mods. This has all been done in stride and over time and all by myself considering cost.

I'm going to give a lot here and don't take this all to heart. This is what I have done to modify my truck with months of investigation and reading and talking.

1. Larger exhaust is a must to keep the EGT's (exhaust gas temps) down. EGT's are the killer of turbo's and over 1200 degrees will fry the impellers. 4" from turbo down pipe to the tail is best and this will keep the temp between 600-900 degrees post turbo under full load. The old fabled tale the larger the pipe the less back pressure and velocity causing slow spool of the turbo. This is not true in the diesel world. Heck if I could fit a 6" pipe on my turbo I would. This gained me 22hp and an extra 2mpg. This will run $395-$600+ depending on Aluminum or Stainless

Note 1: Food for thought ask if you can omit the muffler and go the extra mile and get a new muffle developed called the AERO TURBINE. It is awesome...

Note 2: Before #2 option is used you MUST use a larger exhaust....

2. A chip is a low cost very easy mod that can be done in a couple of hours. I tried 2 different way's. First was with the "flip" chip that increased power on the fly when you need it. The concern I had was they the "chip" altered the engine timing and injectors. The injector oil pressures where increased causing my injectors to way loud and could prematurely fail the injectors, so I returned the unit. I ended up going with the Big Hoss chip from Banks rated for the 120hp 250 ft lbs torque increase. This chip comes on strong and hard when needed. You will notice the power under your pedal instantly, its a rush.

3. I upgraded the compressor fan in the turbo. This is the least expensive option for the money for what it fixes. @ 1800-2200 RPM under moderate boost most drivers feel a "flutter" or lag from the turbo. The Compressor fan OE is one height; the new wheel is variable height and allows the compressor to grab more air at different levels. ATS offers a housing that increases the intake volume and states it solves the flutter but costs $300+ where the wheel replacement is under $90.

I have plenty more, if your interested let me know.

Sorry I forgot about the tires... I see you don't like BFG's. I just put on a set of 315X70R17's on American Racing "outlaw" 17' wheels.

The Wheel I pick'd up on Ebay for $200 for the set yeh $200 NEW! and the tries from tire rack for $125.00 each.

Mr. Murray...

thank you very much for your well stated input...it is greatly appreciated. Lets get one thing clear...When I registered for this forum, I was in a tad bit of a rush, and misspelled DIESEL; I just haven't had the time to go back and change it...now that my mistake is public, I will change my name tonight. Thank for being the observant one in the crowd...

moving on...

I agree, I originally wanted to go 4" exhaust. I always thought..."the bigger the better!" I will probably take your advise on that. Which would be better: alluminum or stainless?

As for the turbo...That will a mod. that I'm looking at doing in another year or so. Not so much by this summer. But it sounds like when I do, I'll have a swift kick in my butt...maybe a bullydog NOS system! yeeha...

I didn't want to buy new wheels. So I was planning on staying with the 16's, but I'll take a loko on ebay and c what I can find. But with your 315x70R17's, do you get any rubbing or binding?

Once again thank you very much for the info...I would love to pick ur brain some more. Maybe a PM is due...

have fun,
DX

DX, please Don.

Sorry for the Diesel comment. Its a slip I understand but I see it all the time and get a kick out of it. I do it myself as well.

Aluminum for the cost savings.. Stainless will be nice and pretty until it rains. Are you going to wipe down the exhaust every time it rains? get the system that has the tip about 13" long and extend that out the cab for the stainless look, enough said.

The turbo Mod is 3.5 hours or less of workand costs under $90.00. You can beat that for what you get.

The tires fit perfectly although rub ever so slightly on hard turns under braking due to the LARGE profile. Once they wear down there none. Take a look copy and paste the below URL.

NOS: Looked into it and decided against it. To damaging to the engine for what you get. I have seen and heard of people throwing rods using NOS and I can take the chance. I don't have a spare engine to boot. However, I'm am working on propane and new Stage/Phase II injectors by Electronic Ejection Service, prices are sharp for what you get. He uses NEW injectors and ports them for a 30% fuel flow increase and no addition fuel pump needed. With propane and injectors I'm looking at a 150hp gain.

If this where a Cummins engine I would gladly install NOS. The rods, connecting rods, and bearing are 3-4 times the strength of the international engine. Remember our engine is still a converted gas 444 block. My father had the same block in his 70's something Thunderbird.

Don, No problem about the comment...just thought I would clerify myself before people thought I was some kind of dork... though my explainations usually never help!

Anyway. I might look turbo mod, especially for only $90. thanks a bunch...

I called around today, and got some prices on a 2 1/2" lift for the X, and auto crafters quoted me $879.00 out the door. This was a procomp suspension lift. Sounded good to me. But like I said before, I don't know much about much when it comes to this type of stuff. I guess this is why I registered here!

I still have to follow up on the exhaust tip, no pun intended, that you gave me earlier Don. Let me know if guys have heard anything bad about ProComp lifts, or if I should go ahead and have a go at it!

thanks a bunch guys!

have fun,

I almost forgot...NOS

I was watching a show on TV, I can't remembe the name for the life of me...and they had put a bully dog system on a duramax (we all know it needed it), and i thought that was pretty neat. Never really actually considered a NOS system on a diesel.

I've always been against NOS systems myself...but oh well. It was just a thought!

have fun!

Byrant,
Welcome to the site!!
For your lift you can do what i am doing! I am placing the set of F-350 springs(X code) in my X. You will get about 3 in of lift from factory springs. Shocks will be bought under the F-350 yr and will need shock pins for the top of the shock(differant than super dutys). I am also install a fabtech adjustable track bar. I am also installing EDGE front leveling "2 mini" spring pack up front and the 4 in ford block in the rear with a add a leaf. I am installing 315/75/16 Nitto Terra Grapplers on a 16x8 rim. Good Luck
