What is the fuel milage difference between the 4 speed pre-2004 and the 2004 5 speed auto tranny? We haven't bought yet and are debating the cost factor of the used vs. new(but better fuel milage) issue. |

Vince,
Are you also looking at the 6.0L verses the 7.3L differences as well? Bigger motor less fuel economy... Although the 7.3L in my opinion is a better motor. The economy will be about a 4-5 mpg difference not much considering.

I have a 2004 4x4 with the 6.0L and 5 speed tranny, bought 8/31. I only have a little over 12,000 miles on it, so it isn't really broken in yet. I keep all my fuel usage information in a spreadsheet. Here is all my info, in a nutshell:
Worst 1 tank average: 14.14 mpg
Best 1 Tank average: 17.67 mpg
Overall average: 15.47 mpg
Lowest miles per day for a tank: 43.91
Highest miles per day for a tank: 729
Average miles per day: 89.01
I only added the miles per day info for comparison to what you normally do. I also have 3 tank and 10 tank averages, and all the data graphed for a quick visual comparison, but I didn't want to bore you more than I already have. |

hey there...hope you don't me adding in my 2 cents!
I have an 02' x with the 7.3, (35,000 miles), and I've gotten up to 23 mpg, and on average on the freeway I get 19mpg, that is at 65, cruise control. Considering how big the truck is, I don't care who you are that is good gas mileage. I used to own a 97 expedition with bigger tires, and it ate gas. Best was 13mpg...ouch. Either way you look at it, you'll probably only get 5-6 mpg difference (if i'm correct), so I wouldn't let mpg hinder your choice. Doesn't the 6.0 have more power than the 7.3? (maybe just a myth...)
have fun,

I'll probably start a war with this, but I'm just trying to help...
Having had an '02 Ex 7.3L and now a '03 Ex 6.0L I can tell you that the 6.0L has MUCH more power than the 7.3L was even when I added the Superchps Microtuner... the Microtuner and Hellwig rear sway bar made it muh more of a sports car, but ..
even stock my 6.0L 5 speed feels quicker to me....
but honestly the claims of 8 - 10% better fuel mileage have not worked out in my case...
maybe because of with only 18k miles I'm still playing to much with the power but on my long trips @ SPEED, whereas the 7.3L would approach 20 or more mpg, the 6.0l gets in the 17 to 18 range....
but don't get it for the mileage... get it because it's a GREAT vehicle....
as far as the mileage, it's not designed to be a gas spinster !
it is an 8K lb truck and like they say

True, but i don't know if my brain can talk my heart into the v10. we've driven both and my wife seems to like the diesel better. It seems that folks are getting 4-7 mpg better with the 6.0; which using 12 mpg as the v10 equals 33 to 58% higher. math geek, i know. i don't know if i can ignore those numbers.

| Don,
haven't looked at the 7.3. kind of want a new one since we'll be driving it till it dies. that's why i'm looking at the fuel milage as a cost issue. just wandering if the new tranny makes that much difference. we'll drive it light. everyday vehicle for my wife and kids.

I hope I'm not out of line here, but...
If this is an every day vehicle for your wife and kids, the diesel might not be the way to go. My understanding is that diesel engines don't resopnd well to multiple short trips. I think you want the vast majority of your driving to be 20 minutes minimum. If your wife doesn't typically drive for extended periods, you might want to opt for the V-10.
In my opinion, the diesel was intended more for towing than anything else. I bought mine to tow a small backhoe afew times each year, and a boat once or twice each month. If not for the towing, I would have gone with the V-10. The difference in price between the two engines is $4755, which will buy almost 3000 gallons of gasoline around here. Even at 10 mpg for the V-10, that makes the first 30000 miles free with respect to fuel costs. |

Orf,
Even if she piles up the miles? 17K or so per year. |

Vince,
I shoped till I dropped.... I finally decided on the Eddie Bauer Edition and price was a factor. I paid 44,600 @ 0 percent financing for 3 years. This truck is my first diesel and a matter of fact my first truck. I will NEVER go back to gas if I had to. The option is of course yours but there has been many issues with the new 6L. The 7.3 has a long history, heck the block has been around since to early 70's.
Yes I have spent a lot of money on her, bringing her up to "full" hp/torque capacity and having fun doing it. My X is in the shop today getting a new trippole lock torque converter installed to handle that extra power.
As Johnboy said- "but don't get it for the mileage... get it because it's a GREAT vehicle.... " The Excursion Diesel is a really nice truck period!
