Vince,
Same here, I had other trucks, all gas and this is my first diesel and I would NEVER get another gas truck . Mileage is not a concern as the vehicle is a lot of fun to drive and the versitilty of it makes it even more appealing. I don't think you would be unhappy with the 6.0 or the 7.3 as both do what you want and some

And in case someone is comparing mpg figures... mine is low because when I say @ speed, - that means substantially higher than MOST people travel...
I am easily bored and so I set the cruise as high as it will hold... 90+ And as high as traffic will permit....
typically before long I have a few straglers on my tail trying to "get in my draft"
I understand the traffic laws etc... I know the safety factors, but this truck is just idling at those speeds and PERFECTLY safe ... ALL interstates have curvatures, etc... designed with 80+ mph speed considerations...
(used to run the IT group at a large consulting firm back in the day when a lot of these interstates were designed)

Vince - Remeber that this is just my opinion, and worth what you paid for it. To me, 17K isn't a lot of miles. I put between 30K and 35K every year. I would be more concerned with the average trip. If she drives mostly longer trips (> 20 minutes) then I wouldn't worry about it. If she takes 10 five mile trips every day, she'll hit 17K in a year but it wouldn't be what I would want my diesel to endure.
JohnBoy - Is it safe to assume that you don't drive in PA very often? There are lots of curves on the interstate here where 80 will get you killed. Don't get me wrong, I'm no speed nazi. My normal cruising speed is 75, and I'll get well above that on open, flat roads. I've driven across Texas a couple of times, and I swear if I had a bungee cord to strap my steering wheel, I could have napped for a while on some of those highways. I hope that didn't come across as an insult. I was just pointing out that the roads are quite different up here, than in the Lone Star state. |

Probably the flattest too. Once can really get moving there.

Vince, there are a few things to consider. Yes, the diesel will get better mileage. No one here will dispute that. But....
Will your wife remember to let the turbo cool down when she gets where shes going? You can get a Turbo Temperature Minder that will take care of that if you want. It keeps the engine running at idle until the egt reaches 300 or so and then kills the engine. If you don't have this and the wife kills the X at school, the store(s) etc, it will have a bad effect on the turbo. Short trips are not a diesels friend. The engine needs to be warmed up to get the best economy and power. A diesel by definition is a heavier and thicker block, so it will take longer to reach NOT (normal operating temperature). As mentioned in a previous post, driving it for 10 minutes and then cutting it off will not help long term. Now, it you live 30 minutes from your kids school, then it is not an issue. Now to the fun part. A diesel just sounds COOL. Not everyone agrees, but if that is what makes you happy, get it. Buying a V10 might make more sense depending on the situation, but if you will never be totally happy with it, don't get it. And most important of all, get what the wife wants. That is the only way you will be happy, too.

Alright, diesel it is. The wife wants it, i want it, done deal. i'll have to add on the turbo cooler if you all think i need it. here's my other delima. 03 with the cash back and the potential for engine bugs or the 04 with the reworked tranny and potentially even better milage.
any thoughts? |

It depends when the '04 was built. My '04 has an '03 engine in it. They say that any built after 8/1/03 should be ok, but mine was built 8/6/03. |

Realize that and I am VERY good at driving to the conditions... Even on the LONG straightaways if there's a lot of traffic, I'm uncomfortable at 55 !!!
growed up on motorcycles and if you don't have an out, you start to get nervous Never driven in Pa... visited a lot since the majority of my group is there, but most of my driving trips are on the long and straights of 1-40, I-30, I-20, etc...
between the DFW area and Memphis (where the wife-unit is from) there are some LLLLOOONNNGGG straightaways !
And who wants to see anything that Bill Clinton had anything to do with ?
Sorry, no insult intended !!! Just want to wash my hands now

Somebody please give me a kick in the ASS!!!!!!!!!! I could kick my own ass for not waiting to be able to afford the diesel. Instead my wife and I were to excited to get the "X" that we were tired of wait the 5 months already. It would have been another 6 months before we could have gotten the diesel. Well, at 9-11 miles a gallon, I should have waited. I want a diesel SO BAD that I can almost tasts the #2 diesel in my mouth as I am over at the unleaded pump. See ya....
