I have one thank you, as you may or may not have noted, away from the Nazi FTE boards where there can be a free flow of discourse without censorship. I also have no need for e-mail discourse with you - but do have a question that I think would interest others here as well.
Why doesn't the FTE site allow users to delete and or modify their own posts after 60 minutes and why wasn't that thread deleted when I requested as much after the college boy posted the first personal attack? If I could have, I would have withdrawn from the thread instantly, but given the situation I couldn't resist jerking the guys chain.

Guys, guys! Cease and desist with the personal stuff. If it doesn't belong on an Excursion, it doesn't belong here. As I often tell my children, I don't care about justice, I care about peace and quiet. Knock it off!

Sound advice and I will heed such at your urging, although be advised that it all began with a discussion regarding an Excursion, and they have now purged my vehicle description in retaliation for speaking my mind on the FTE site.
You are from the great state of Texas, so my respect for you is an obligation due to heritage if nothing else for the time being. I am not a slacker who would lie vagrant while you or your family required help, food or protection. There is a difference in men that I have found to be profound in those matters, especially so on the internet where words take the place of kindness and threats are made without thought of retaliation.
Good day to you sir.

FTE=Ford Truck Enthusiasts. See at http://www.fordtruckenthusiasts.com/ Good website. Lots of people frequent FTE and here. FTE is less specific than here. It encompasses all Ford "trucks".

Brian,
As far as I know, Flowmaster does not have an application for the "X". You'd be better served to look into Gibson or Banks. Definitely add the K&N filter. If you can afford it upgrade to K&N's FIPK II. The throttle response alone is worth the upgrade. I have used K&N for years, they work with better proficiency that paper filters. You'll never see great mileage. Let's face it, this is a 4 ton vehicle with a big engine. As you've seen, it is well worth the trade-off when you get into inclement weather. I've owned cars with comparable engines that have gotten the same mileage. Good Luck! |

I took my V10 Y2K X with 3.73s on a 600 mile round trip yesterday. The odo turned 55k miles on the trip. The highest (indicated) mpg I'd ever gotten was across Indiana last May with five adults in the car and luggage, it showed 17.1, but we averaged about 15.5 on the trip out. Since then, the general mileage I've gotten has been around 12.5-13.5 mpg combined city/hwy. I recently researched the K&N FIPK. I've read both the pros and cons... and since I've got less common sense than the disire to see what it could do, I sprung the $250 for one. I put it on last week, and took the trip yesterday. At one point yesterday with the same five adults, I had 17.4 mpg indicated over 150 miles! Then, on the return trip, the weather turned foul, and I was bucking 35-45 mph head/side winds with higher gusts. The indicated mph for the remainder of the trip home in the nasty weather was about 14 mpg. The thing that I notice about the K&N is that the engine doesn't scream when I start it up and at idle. The stock air cleaner filter I took off wasn't particularly dirty, but it seems to be a lot more restrictive on airflow than the K&N, and the engine seems to idle easier. I don't know long-term what the effect, if any, will be on mileage but my trip yesterday was certainly encouraging.
I know about all of the airflow issues with the K&N, and that it probably won't filter as well, etc. etc., but I don't off-road the beast (I have a Toyota beater for that), and hardly ever drive unpaved roads, so I'm not too concerned about getting gravel down the intake! I wanted to see mostly if I could eek a little more power out of the V10 when towing our 34' Airstream.
It certainly appears that some of the mileage issues have to do with the rear-end ratios... I'd think you'd expect to get some 20% less mileage with 4.88s than 3.73... There is a sacrifice for monsterous torque to the wheels...

Had my 03 V10 X with 3.73's on a road trip over the last two days, 690 miles total. Outbound I ran 76-78 mph and got 13.11 mpg. On the return trip I ran 70mph and got 15.36 mpg. This is based on actual fuel used. The Ford computer showed about .2 better mpg in both directions. Before I left I increased the air preasure in my REVO's to 65 psi all around. The REVO's are very impressive tires....quiet, and a much improved ride!
