I seem to be getting less than the rest of you, don't know why. Computer reads 8-10 mpg around town , and I don't think I have ever gotten better than 13 on the highway . Towing a 6000lb camper yields a wopping 7-8 mpg's. I have an 01 4x4 Limited, Michelin tires running 60 pounds, and K&N drop in filter. I was just on the fence of selling this beast to pick up an Expedition with a V-8 for better fuel economy and a nicer (less truck like) ride, but it was cost prohibitive. Not sure how much better mpg's an Expedition will get me either, so I will stick with the size and V-10 of the X for now.

Keith,
On your next fill up bring up the mileage on your overhead and press both buttons together until O appears. Then you will find out the REAL or close to it MPG. Keep it under 2000 rpm's and a clean air filter. Keep tires pumped up to the max and reap your better MPG.

I always do reset the overhead. What psi do you recommend for best mpg's? I am running 60 all around now, should I go to max 80psi? I also added the drop in K&N air filter about 16K miles ago, should I go back to the stock air filter? I checked the K&N and it looked relatively clean, guess I could wash it and "re-charge" it. I took the X out with the family yesterday, filled up, reset the overhead, and for the most part, we were cruising at a steady 50-55mph. Got up to 13.4 mpg on the readout before getting in town, then it dropped down to 12.7. Back out on the highway at 65 it crept back up to 13.0 Does this sound normal? Around town the overhead shows in the 9mpg range, I figured driving at 50mph with RPM's below 2K should reap more like 14-15mpg's. This is the 4x4 Limited version X, a 2001. Is there anthing else I can do/change to get better mpg's?

Love this X, size is awesome for carrying the family and still have a huge trunk area, but I find the ride is a bit too trucky (hard) and the mpg's are not good in comparison to the competition. My co-worker has an 02 Suburban, NICE RIDE, gets 13 mpg's city, and we hit 18mpg's on the highway on a business trip with all highway miles. Wish the X rode as nice as the Suburban and got it's mpg's, that would be a perfect vehicle! Suburban's V8 will pull plenty, V10 of the X is nice though, and I love the space of the X. The Suburban feels confined in comparison, tight front seats, limited leg room everywhere. The Suburban also does not seem to be as reliable as the X - my friend has owned a 99 which was constantly in the shop with electrical problems, then bought this 02 which has been in the shop for several issues including the a/c compressor going bad with 30K miles on the clock.

Keith,
It sounds like you have the same towing gears that I have on my X.......4.30.....Great for towing and getting off at the light but horrible for MPG. I get around 9-10mpg local and a best of 13.4 with the Mac cold air intake. I think if we got a less restrictive muffler we might get another 1 mpg. V10 excursions came with 2 gear ratios....3.73 and the 4.30. The 5.4 V8 comes with 4.10 and all diesels come with 3.73. The sub are made for soft people carrier rides. They would break if they tried what we do and tow with our X's. The X is a 3/4 ton tow machine with solid axle's. Great for towing and snow and Mud but hurts in the softness area.

Back to MPG. Keep the air cleaner clean, tires at or around 60 psi, rpms under 2000 and maybe a less restrictive muffler like a quiet Magna flow. Thats the best you are going to get.

Ok-ive gotta figure this out..Ive had my Ex since Mar 04-I bought it and brough it home, did an oil change and everything, I looked at the overhead computer the day we drove it off the lot and it read 8.8...I about died, but I thought ahhh they arent correct. The next fill up, I reset the computer, and also wrote down my milage ect... I did the math, and looked at the computer, and I got 12.4 in town, and We took it to PA on a road trip, I got a consistant 13.4-14.6. Im running the V-10 -Drop in K&N 4:30's and Gibson Cat back, MIchelin LTX A/T's LR E running 65 psi! When I did the math on paper, the milage from the computer only varied anywhere from .3-.5 mpg! I do keep the RPM's down in town, and dont let her idle much when I run in the store, but I guess Im doin better than most!! I will have to post pix next time I get readings like that! I agree with Birdman, a clean airfilter is a MUST. ANd I actually got better milage on a fresh oil change! I upgraded to Royal Purple, and a K&N oil filter and it works great!! I hope this helps!!

I have an '00 Ex with the V-10, and with only regular oil changes and a drop in K&N filter (mine also has the 3.73 rears in it), I AVERAGE 13.8 MPG. That includes around town and highway. On a long trip, it gets as good as 14.9- 15.5. I don't now why, but I'm not complaining!

Welcome Xman00
That is good mileage but expected with 3.73. The ones including me have 4.30 gears are getting less. Post us a picture or two.

How can I find out what gears I have (the 4.30 or 3.73) ? I remember crawling under the car once to find out if I had the limited slip rear axle but could not find anything.

Thanx.

the one on the front diff is easier to read though...4.30LS or limited slip is D-148-A . This is upside down though with four little boxs also upside down. The third box under the 8 in the above letters is MY gears printed 4.30. The other way is the rpm's at 70 mph is at 2200 rpms....

Didn't see any of those codes on the rear axle. My label on the drivers side inside the door says "AXLE C3" Anybody know what axle the C3 is?
