Hey folks,
I have to put in my 2 cents in as well. I have been a PSD owner for a couple of years now and I will never go back to %*[email protected]# GAS [email protected]$*. I purchased the PSD, for longevity, hp/torque, economy, modification capabilities (as you see below) and overall history of the PSD.
I'm in NJ where the prices fluctuate as the days get cold. Mike I hear you on your gripes but remember diesel fuel jumps as the cold comes in and drops as it gets warmer. If you didn't already know diesel fuel is also heating oil just dyed differently for tax purposes. As the demand for heating oil goes down so does the price. I remember paying $1.19 gal last summer where it $2.09 the previous winter. It will even out and so will your math.
The Excursion is a down right a great truck and (look again guy's) our trucks weight 9300lbs. Mine is an Eddie Bauer and I weighed it at a local cement factory a whopping 9739lbs. That a lot of steel being moved by some 7.3L motor.
As Charles said buy used. You can great a great deal for and 02'-03' 7.3L PSD for decent money and the depreciation has already been taken. You'll be golden.
I just heard on the news we just got hit with the largest gas spike in 14 years. The GAS prices are heading up again where diesel fuel tends to stay down for the most.
You mention oil changes! Go synthetic and you can double you oil change intervals. I go 25,000 miles with a bypass filter.

I am not a macho man who wants to drive a manly truck to stroke my ego. I am a smart man who wants to make intelligent financial decisions.
Perhaps I am asking the question in the wrong venue. | I think you each have a point. There is an intrinsic appeal to the sound and power of a PSD. There is also the towing advantage. If long distance trailering is a part of your lifestyle the advantages of a PSD are spoken of in many other posts on this site. If MPG and vehicle operating cost is the primary factor in choosing gas vs desiel.. then the debates can go on and on and on..Depends how you use the truck.. Also, if you change yur own oil the cost isnt that painful..FYI in West NY, diesel is less than gas by a few cents.. I have received some good advise in this forum... One person said that if you really WANT the PSD, get it or you will always wish you had.. Good luck with your decision... I am now out of the research mode and actively seeking My PSD "X"... However I drove a Suburban 2500 today and liked it alot... I may be open to the Chevy.. unless anyone wants to convinvce me otherwise?? Bill
| Why on earth would you want to drive anything other than an EX?
I drove the suburban and I thought it felt like driving the exon valdies.
I don't get that feeling with the Ex and the Cruise control is better too.
Dave.

Well here's my 2 cents, and now, this is not the "wrong venue", for what ever reason you felt that neccesary to say. I bought ours for, and choose a PSD, for some of the same reasons above. Longevity, power, cool factor and MPG!! My Expedition was awesome and with the modification I did, it towed our 7500# boat great! The Excursion, with a PSD does a better job towing without any modifications, but of course there is plenty of room for improvement in several areas so I'll keep busy.
On the MPG and fuel issue, I had to run Premium gas in the Expy and right no Prem is running about $1.90 a gallon. Diesel here in north Texas is back to being less than regular. I'm paying about $1.50-$1.56 per gallon of deisel. Normally I'll save anywhere from .20 to .40 cents a gallon and won't have to increase fuel cost for modifications. I'm getting about 16-18 MPG on the HWY (only have 3000 miles now and that milage is based on Texas and Colorado with elivations from 500 to 11k and temps from single digit to over 90 not to mention different fuels)
I expect I'll get 18+ on the hwy and around town I'll probably do about what I did in the Expy af anywhere from 12-15 MPG and that's short

I personally feel you have to factor in the resale value of a PSD over a V-10 - something that isn't really being discussed here.
Yes, a PSD runs $4k more than a V10. Break-even on fuel ONLY may very well be 100k miles (although gas vs. diesel prices here in Iowa are almost identical to Jim's post above).
How much of that difference is retained in the resale value when you trade/sell the Excursion?
I haven't looked at the numbers much, but I'd feel confident in saying at least half of that value is retained....
Just another item to factor into the discussion.

Hmmm, buy the diesel for longevity (ie. motor will last forever), note higher resale value for PSD, but that doesn't add up. Why sell the X if you buy it for longevity? I often hear people quote the resale value of a two year old PSD, but if you ask them why they purchased it they will say because it lasts sooooooo long. Isn't that a contradiction? Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the diesel, and would have gladly purchased one instead of the V10 if one had been available for close to the same price. I just have to voice my opinion on the whole "resale" value of the PSD.
Vehicles are not investments, period! Unless it is a classic or extremely rare. Just buy the one you want and drive it.
