I currently have a 2000 V10 Excursion and regularly tow a toy hauler that is around 8500lbs fully loaded.
I'M SICK AND TIRED OF THE WEEK V10 AND IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE.
The question I have is, am I better off with a used 7.3 PSD or just buy a new 6.0 PSD before they stop making them?
Also wondering what gearing I should get, keep in mind I use the truck mostly for towing?
And if your so inclined, I would appreciate a couple answers to some basic questions about the PSD Excursions to help make my decision about dropping another 40K+ on a new truck.
Is yours 2 or 4 wheel drive?
Do you have the 6.0 or the 7.3 PSD?
How much does your trailer weigh?
What kind of mileage do you get when towing?
Do you have any trouble clipping along at 65 MPH when towing?
Anything else you have to say about your PSD Excursion that may help me decide whether or not to make the switch?
Thanks for your answers. |

i have a 00' 7.3 psd, 4x4
i love it.
I would pick the 7.3 over the 6.0, but thats just me and my own humble opinion.
But, if your concerded with a ford warranty than consider the 7.3 has a 100k mile or 5 year total motor coverage.
And its 2004. So, even if you get a low mileage 7.3 the clock is ticking fast on the warranty meter. |

Brian, since you will be towing most of the time, I would go with the new 6.0 setup. The latest Exursions have the running lights/turn signal setup in the towing mirrors, which is a nice safety feature. I think also that the five speed Torqshift is a bit better set up for towing with a selectable tow-haul setting. One of the members here - who builds transmissions and knows his stuff - says that the torque converter in the new five speed is just as bad as the one in the old 4R100.
All things considered, I think I'd go with new. I think the warranty comment is pretty good too.
Good luck!

I have a 2000 LTD PSD and Ive never had a problem with the engine. I would guess that if you can find one that has never had a problem like mine, that a second hand 7.3L would be ok despite any waranty issues. Certainly, low milage would be a bonus.
