Well I went to the local dealer and sat in an XLT.

Lo and behold the wheel felt much better! The Eddie Bauer's and Limiteds I had tried earlier felt too skinny to me. I think it has something to do with the wheel that contains all the redundant controls for audio, heat and A/C. I can't imagine why this would make a difference but the same thing is true if you compare Explorers.

Yes I may be splitting hairs but if you tried them side by side I think many would agree it changes the feel of the truck significantly.
