What I read in the rumor mill that RH started outsourcing the manufacture of their bumpers either abroad in Texas or Mexico from what I gather from Texans.
From what I'm told by Maverick owners that they're going out of business either due to the tough market or manufacturing problems,I know the cost of steel has went up dramatically in the last year.

Hello,
I am a new member to the forum but have read hundreds of threads here before buying my 2003 V10 Limited with 38k miles about one month ago. I have read about all the potential upgrades etc.
Right now, I am interested in either the Ranchhand Euro grill guard or the full front bumper replacement. Based on what I have read here I am concerned that a full front bumper replacement may be too heavy for stock shocks/suspension and may also negatively affect handling. I know I can easily replace the shocks but I was going to get the install of the grill guard or full bumper this weekend. Shocks would not come for a while. My wife also drives it so a significant change in handling is not what I need. I do not do any off road driving but do see deer about everyday.
Can someone provide some direction here? From a technical point of view which is better for a stock Excursion? Is the front bumper replacement borderline too heavy? Should I just get the grill guard? I like the looks of both and there is about a $400 difference.
Thanks!

Welcome to the site I dont think the stock springs will handle the weight of the full replacement bumper. I would recomend or X code super duty springs...Then you can add the extra weight and the springs will handle it..
Take us a picture of your X .

X codes may be right on for a plow but a little 250 lb bumper may be abit overkill in my opinion.
The V code set is perfect for our full replacement bumper I'm always open to opinions and suggestions

So it appears stock shocks are not sufficient for the Ranchhand front bumper replacement. Is that correct?
This is my first truck so V and X codes do not mean anything to me at this point. What "code" shocks come with the Limited?
Also, why do some go with the bumper vs. just the grill guard. For my everyday driving will the grill guard suffice in the case of a minor accident, bump, or deer?
Thanks

All 4x4 Excursions come with the low D code front springs.
The stock shocks are fine for just shocks but upgrading them to name branders will result in better ride quality with or without a heavy duty bumper such as a Ranch Hand style.
V code springs will benefit about 1.5" average lift and X codes around 2"(X coders chime in)
We chose the full replacement for additional protection from area drivers,I personally look at the brush guards more for looks than anything but that's just my .02

Does anybody know the weight of a stock front bumper?
What are the weights of the aftermarket bumpers that are mentioned above?
If he's got a V10 though, he can afford a little extra weight...no? Now if it was a Powerstroke, I'd be hesitant. Just thought I'd point that out.
BTW, welcome to the club CoolStrategist!!

BTW, welcome to the club CoolStrategist!! | Thanks! I am glad to be here and have learned a lot. You pose a good question. I have read somewhere here that the Ranchhand bumber is about 250lbs. I do not know how accurate that is. But it would be nice to know the net difference between it and stock to determine if my stock shocks can handle it. Anyone know?
If I could get away with my stock shocks for a few months of city/hwy driving if I get the bumper that would be nice. But I do not want to take any chances either.
Where is everybody getting their V codes and approx cost? And who can put them on? Excuse my ignorance but is that something that places similar to Midas can do?
Also, from an aesthetic point of view it appears most like the grill guard only on the Ex. I do not want a "farm" look. Any other opinions?

Stock bumper is about 75 pounds with the plastic trim and bracketry on it.
The standard trim full replacement is about 250 pounds or 175 more than stock.
The stock shocks can handle the bumper but who wants stock stuff anyways Bill
