Ok, went to greenway ford today.they told me they could not find a tsb for the rear and I would still have to pay to fix it???Will me replacing the leafs in the back repair this problem???They are about $150 per side.I also had them cross reference the snubbers from a 00' to a 04' and they are the same part ##'s??????I am also still getting the thumping sound in the front.I tried to crank down on the swaybar endlinks and they wouldn't budge.

Would a new lift kit repair this problem also??I am trying to come up with a viable solution to this, please help! Thanks

Alright, I pulled out the ol' folder of receipts for my Excursion dating back to its purchase in August of 2000. I found the service invoice that lists the fix for the rear clunking sound. This was dated 2/15/2001...nearly a 4-year old invoice. I can't believe I've owned the X this long.

Anyway, here's what it says:

C CLUNK NOISE ON DRIVERS SIDE REAR OF VEHICLE OVER BUMPS.

CAUSE: MT4730 TIME TO INSPECT SUSPENSION
TIGHTEN BOLTS IN REAR FOUND REAR SPRING
JOUNCE BUMPERS HITTING SPRING INSTALLED
UPDATED BUMPERS
MT MT4730 TIME TO INSPECT AND TIGHTEN
BOLTS IN REAR AND INSTALL NEW UPDATED BUMPERS
6031 WF94 (N/C)
2 YC3Z*4730*AA BMPR
ASY-RR AX (N/C)
FC: N51 42
PART#: YC3Z*4730*AA

Here's the part number information from http://www.fordpartsonline.com

Item: YC3Z4730AA
List: $15.43
Core Price: $0.00
Price: $11.57

Rear suspension - Suspension components - Bumper
Bumper Back 2000 - 2004

I don't see any TSB information listed here, I just remember the service manager telling me that this repair was covered by a TSB. The dealership will be able to tell if the above part number replaced another part number. It seems that it would be a replacement part because of how it was listed: "install new updated bumpers." I never had the rear clunking problem after they performed this fix.

Just because the part number is the same for 00-04, doesn't mean that your '00 X has the same part number. It could have an older version of these...it seems like mine did judging by the service invoice.

New factory leaf springs seem overkill for the fixing of a $11.57 part. A suspension lift would only help if you replace the rear springs. Many kits come with rear lift blocks and use the factory leaf springs...so you'd be back at square one.

Hope this helps.

There are leaf springs and then there are coil springs. The 4x4 Excursion has leaf springs on the front and rear.

Leaf springs look like this:

Coil springs look like this:

(Note that neither of these above pics are from an Excursion)

And then, here's what the snubber looked like on my Excursion. Perhaps yours is an earlier part and looks a little different?
