Please excuse the generic description of the subject here, but I think this is where the problem lies.

Old Vehicle: 2000 Excursion XLT, 7.3L, 4x4
New Vehicle: 2001 Excursion XLT, 7.3L, 4x2

I just bought a replacement excursion after my first one was wrecked and have noticed a low to medium level whine which my original one didn't have. It appears to be from the transmission. The reason I think this is the whine is most evident when approaching 2,000 RPM just before it shits. Once it shifts, the noise is not evident. And no, it it not the whine of the turbo as that is a quiter whine and comes in at a different time.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this normal and simply the difference between the 4x2 and 4x4 or the model year?

Thanks in advance.

Dana

Transmission wise I'd take a look at the Torque Converter.
I'd check the boost tubes to make sure they are tight and do you have an aftermarket intake air filter system,I know it's not tranny related I'm just asking

Are the boost tubes something I can access? No aftermarket air filter system. I do have an AFE airfilter that I kept from the other one. Have to clean it though. One thing I did notice is the plastic base where the latch on the left side tightens is broken. Not sure how to fix that with out replacing the box other than a bungee cord or something. I will try tightening that down and see if this is the source of the whine.

On the top of the engine will be two rubber boots,one on the left is black and the right is blue as pictured;

Just under the turbocharger assembly will be two reddish color boots, check them to make sure they are secure.

There'll be two more boost tube boots you check just to be sure, one on each side of the radiator fan shroud(lower area) they should be blue in color if my memory recalls correctly

A sign of leaky boots will be the oily residue on the boots and adjacent connection locations.

There's about 18psi max boost pressure on a stock 7.3L system so you'll see the leak points if there is any.

I've seen some boots start to crack due to age also..

A few questions for you:

1.) Does this happen in every gear while approaching 2000 RPM? Or is it more evident at a particular gear or speed?

2.) Does it do it all the time (i.e. even when the truck is at operating temp)? Or just when it's cold?

3.) How many miles on the replacement X?

Eric,

1. It does happen in every gear, with the possible exception of overdrive. I will verify the speeds and rpms tonight.

2. I believe it happens at all temps but will veirfy that as well. I may be noticing it when I first get going and then block it out/turn up the music.

3. 94K on the replacement.

It does happen in every gear. But less noticeable when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. But it does happen in all gears, including overdrive.

It is noticeable when idling but at a lower frequency. In between idle and about 1400 rpm (when under light accleration) the noise isn't as noticeable. From 1400-1900 rpm it becomes more noticeable, due to the higher frequency and the increase in volume of the noise.

Under heavy accleration is when it is noticed at the higher rpms ( 1700- 2100)

Sounds more like the whine of a blower on a dragster, or street rod, than anything else.

I will be checking the boost tube boots tonight.

Stopped by the dealer yesterday and one of the techs that rode with me said that he thinks it is the waste gate dumping. I asked him why he thought it would dumping all through the rpm range (1400-2000) and I didn't quite get an answer. However, he did happen to say that the turbo is different , and larger, on the 2001 so that might explain why it is a different sound than the 2000.
