Stopped by the dealer yesterday and one of the techs that rode with me said that he thinks it is the waste gate dumping. I asked him why he thought it would dumping all through the rpm range (1400-2000) and I didn't quite get an answer. However, he did happen to say that the turbo is different , and larger, on the 2001 so that might explain why it is a different sound than the 2000.

Is this true (larger turbo on '01)? I know the turbo changed from '99 to '00, but that was just the SuperDuties as the Excursion started in '00. Consequently, the '00 turbo is quieter than the '99 (brother-in-law has a '99 F250).

Also, the waste gate should only dump excess boost, if I'm not mistaken. If you're running a stock 7.3L and it's dumping all the time between 1400 and 2000 RPM, something is not right.

At the very least, take it in for a warranty claim on the engine for the noise it's making. $100 deductible. The PSD warranty is transferrable to you even as a 2nd/3rd/etc. owner.

I did take into the dealer and the told me, again, that it was the wastegate dumping. That diagnosis seems odd, as you would think the wastegate wouldn't dump until you began getting up into the higher rpms. Which would naturally mean higher pressure. I guess my whole in ability to accept this is due to the fact that I begin hearing the noise at approximately 1400 rpm. Maybe I'm just crazy. Anyway, I guess this thread is dead, but wanted to wrap it up appropriately. Thanks, all!

Wastegate dumping I'm not real familiar with now the wastegate closing yes. Has the warmer weather(depending on your location) helped much?

I really don't want to let this go until it's totally resolved, now I know the compressor wheel starts whistling at the mid teens area if that has anything to do with it.

Do they have another 7.3L diesel on the lot that you can test drive? You shouldn't be dumping boost at 1400 rpm. That is not normal.

Did he ever give you a better explaination of why it's wastegate noise at such low rpm? Typically you hear this under WOT when you're producing maximum boost. Does it make this noise at varying levels of throttle application?

Would it be that simple? That this is just a different, and louder, turbo? I think I mentioned before that they (dealer) told me it was a different, and larger, turbo than the 2000 model year. I tried finding a previous post where I had asked at what point the turbo kicked in but couldn't find it. I realize it does start spooling early, but I think my earlier post was asking at what point the "boost" kicks in.

Maybe I should try to stick a microphone from my computer down next to the turbo and record it on my laptop? If the wire is long enough. That might help me isolate it. Then, if I get a decent sound I could post it for ID.

If I get time I will see if they have anything else I could test drive to compare.

I do hear it at WOT, but I also hear it when I'm slowly accelerating. It starts out somewhat quiet and slowly builds until it shifts. It is most noticeable when in third between approximately 35 and 41 mph, before it shifts to overdrive.

But, no, the change in weather does not seem to impact any properties of the noise. It has not changed in wave length frequency, volume, etc.

The loudest stock 7.3L turbo I'm familiar with is on the 1999 Powerstroke engine,I know when we replaced the compressor wheel on our 2002 with the Wicked Wheel (1999 7.3L turbo wheel) the whistle/whine became alot louder.

If you can put a microphone to the engine and get a good recording I'd really like to put an ear to it.

Speaking of tranny whines, I've got one but I only hear it while driving easily at lower speeds and especially while coasting to a stop ( when the PSD is not roaring).

Wile coasting at slower speeds I've tried shifting the tranny into nuetral to see if the whine stopped, but it made no difference, so maybe it ain't the tranny.

Reason the trans is suspect is the fact that I drove about 170 miles non-stop at highway speeds, about 65-70, got to my destination stopped for about 30 minutes, then got back in the X and drove the 170 miles home> had a full load of folks in the vehicle, but that's it. about a 98 degree day that day.

I noticed when I got home later, that there was a small puddle of red trans fluid, not drips.. but a little pool. I parked it later that night and checked the next morning, no tranny puddle. Checked the fluid and it was a quart low. Added a quart and have not seen another leak, yet. But do noticed the whine.

Any ideas?
