Most who run straight pipes complain about the noise.
I ran a FM40 wit hthe stock tailpipe and it drove me crazy in many RPM ranges. In fact, wife said ABSOLUTELY NOT on this truck. I am forbidden ot ever put aFlowmaster on anything. I had one on my now defuct 03 Expedition and she hated that one too...
Modern cats, like the one on our Ex, are not very restrictive. You can pull it but it'll be a loud sonnuvagun.

| Quote: | While on the exhaust system subject, has anyone removed the catalytic converters on their truck? I think back to the late 70’s early 80’s everyone was cutting them off and getting an extra 5-7 MPG on their cars. I know the technology has changed, but is their a performance or MPG boost by replacing them with the straight pipe?
Now I am not expecting to get flamed by tree huggers with this question. After all this is a forum for the largest evil SUV we can lay our hands on. | can't really spek to the v-10 - but the 6-oh has a huge 4 " flow thru cat....
have seen reports from trusted sources that dyno runs and drag slips are very nearly the same with or without cat.... that was both "tuned up" and stock...
so I had mine put back in when I put the turbo back exhaust in....
and I tried the straight pipe (no muffler) for a short time in the X - NOT the way to go on long trips !
it will drone you to death after about an hour !!! At least the four adults on our one and only trip with it like that thought so !

I have now finished my new "Y" pipe and have it installed. I made it from a transition piece from "Dr. Gas" and a 90 degree mandrel formed elbow. I also put on a Walker Dyna Max Ultra-Flow (WLK-17235 from Summit Racing) Muffler. Walker has a $50. Rebate. The Passenger's side is a solid pipe up to the stub that remained on the exhaust manifold. The Driver's side is connected with S/S Flex pipe - again to the stub that remained on the exhaust manifold. Both stubs have a 3" to 4" section of 2-1/2 inch OD solid pipe welded in place to get the correct sizing to mate to the new pipes.
The V-10 is just about as quiet as stock with no resonance points. Total cost with the muffler was about $225. with all the labor my me.

I took a trip from Knoxville,Tn to Berea,Ky - 280 miles round trip. This stretch of road has a lot of long grades and hills. Actual fuel usage (with careful fillups - back to the same gas pump) gave 18.4 MPG's at a "cruise Speed" of 59 MPH. The very best I have ever gotten prior to this was 16 MPG - mostly on level ground at 60 MPH with my wife driving. I chose 59 MPH because that is the speed I tow my 9200 # trailer and I can get a good comparison. |
