Okay, I just went out and measured mine. the 4X4 struts [overall length] is 14 3/4". The overall length of the 4X2 struts are 15 1/2". I can't get to the pins so I measured the overall length. The part number for the 4X2 struts is: YC3Z 78406A10AA. They aren't much longer, but because of where they attach, they do make a BIG difference. I can now stand under the hatch without banging my head.

Wonder what the difference is. Plus, I measured it at 14.5" and yes, I have 2WD.
Weird stuff...
Glad your head is okay now!

Sounds like yours is a hybrid Monsta!
my 4x4 struts measured between 14.5 and 14 7/8" or so - from end to end... didn't measure center to center since I would have been guessing at the center line.
And without taking the load off them or taking them off to measure them unladen, they may be even longer - who knows

The dfferent part numbers may be due in part to the fact that Monsta has a 2005 and I have a 2002. The dealer insisted on knowing the year of my EX.

Ok, so here's the info...or at least as much as I can offer currently.
The 4x2 struts are only like 1/2" longer than the 4x4 ones. I had the parts guy order up two of the part number that Bill furnished earlier in the post. When they arrived, the bags had that part number, but the struts INSIDE the bags had the part number that *I* listed earlier. So, unfortunately, I *HAVE* the longer 2wd struts. I had him get a 4x strut off the shelf, and though I didn't have tape with me, eyeballed about 1/2" difference between the two. He verified the part numbers for both 2wd and 4x from Y2K through 2k5 and they all were the same respective numbers.
Here's the deal on the part numbers. According to my parts guy, the part number on the side of the strut is actually an "engineering number", not a part number. If you put that number in the computer, it will give you the actual part number. According to the parts guy, the "Engineering number" tells a little more about specifics about how that particular part was manufactured...whether it was one vendor or another, etc. So, there might be several variant "Engineering" numbers that are the same actual *PART* number. Comprehende? Me neither. So, my next project is to go back to AutoZone and start measuring the struts. As I may have previously mentioned, mine are 14.625" pin center to pin center. Measuring the compressed length by subtracting out the clean "travel" area of the strut from the overall extended length gave me real close to 9.875" maximum compressed length in order for the gate to close correctly. So, I'm trying to find a strut with the overall compressed length no longer than 9.875". Found one that was 10.25" C and 16" E, but obviously that won't compress far enough to work. I may elect to use that strut and relocate either the frame or the window pins somehow...but I haven't had enough time to research doing that yet. So, I'm frustrated that this was not a slam dunk as I had hoped it would be...but at least I might have helped resolve some unanswered questions with respect to the crazy non-matching part numbers on the side of the strut itself, as well as the overall compressed length maximum. If anyone happens into an auto parts store and finds a strut that compressed length, do let us know!!!
Thanks,
Kevin

SOOOOOOOOOOOOO frustrated now with this project. I went through AutoZone searching with a tape measure to find a strut that would be longer, but no greater than 9.875" compressed. Got a false sense of hope when I found a Mighty-lift strut that I thought would work. It was 16" extended and like 9.75" compressed. (p/n 4682 1711). Problem: It only has 80psi of gas charge, and won't hold the hatch open, even with only replacing one of them and leaving the factory one on the other side. I called Arvin-Meritor light vehicle division and got one of their application specialists on the line. She told me that they don't have an application for the rear of an Excursion in the system (only the hood) and she couldn't reference the Ford part number or the Ford "engineering number" in her system. It wasn't even on the "to be newly released" list that she scoured. There are other struts that would work in the gas charge department...but they were either too long or too short to work. The short ones were only 15" long, too short of a gain to be of any assistance.
However, I refuse to buy a lift kit just so that I can get under the glass without bumping my head. I'm going to fabricate up a prototype bracket to relocate that stupid ball lower on the window frame in order to use a longer strut one of these weekends. Hell, maybe I'll even make a batch of them and sell them to other Excursion owners who want to have the same thing and have hit the same dead-end I have. How frustrating!!
