I bought my PSD excursion in July. I just paid $95 to fill up the tank and that's with 1/4 left in the tank. $3.09/gal here. As I have other vehicles I use daily, how long should I let the excursion sit before using it without any adverse effects? Jerry

Since you're in the San Diego area all you'd need to do is start it once in awhile, drive forward and reverse a few times to keep the diesel fuel well mixed.

YOu did good to fill it up before parking it....
the less air in the tank, the less room for condensation (water) to get into the fuel...
go by wally world and get a bottle of the powerservice and mix some in before driving it around to disperse it - will help condition the fuel !

Eric, I am going to be driving over the road for the next 6 months and my truck will be sitting for 14 days at a time.... It will always be filled up and I will have the fuel additive you can get from WalMart (name fails me right now but they have a summer and winter version)... My truck will be in the depot lot and no one around to start it, anything I should do as a precaution to prevent problems (will be parked in PA and the winters there can be brutal) Thanks

What does is that it'll be outside (right?) during the winter. I would check out these cold weather tips for diesels: http://www.supermotors.org/clubs/fordexcursions/articles/article_4/index.php You're correct in taking precautions with your fuel to prevent gelling and to help with cold-weather starts. The bigger concern is whether or not the oil is going to be too sludgy to get the PSD started. This is where the engine block heater comes into play. I run Amsoil's Heavy Duty synthetic 5W-30 diesel oil: http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/hdd.aspx Here's the description from their site:
Low Temperature Protection AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy-Duty Diesel Oil remains fluid at temperatures as low as -60° F (-51° C). It circulates rapidly to provide vital lubrication and prevent engine wear caused by lack of oil flow. AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy-Duty Diesel Oil allows quicker, easier cold temperature starting with significantly reduced engine wear.

Eric,
Unfortunately, yes, the Hot Rod willbe sitting outside during that time and I would plug up the block heater but there are NO outlets or anything in the depot lot I am actually thinking about having the wife drop me off before my runs and leave the truck home or program the remote start to fire the truck every 30 hours or so (it will run for 20 minutes and than reset itself.... just had one installed on the wifes car and now I am actually considering one for the rig)
Thoughts on this?
Ray
PS: Thank you much for the info from Amsoil, will be checking into that more also

PS: Thank you much for the info from Amsoil, will be checking into that more also | I have a remote start on my X and swear by it. It's about 5 years old so I'm sure the intervals are handled differently now. I don't remember what kind of control I have over the automatic start intervals, but mine does run 24 minutes before shutting down when I manually remote start it.
I personally would have it start every 12-15 hours if possible to let it run for 20 minutes. I'm just thinking of the winters here in MN and 30 hours would be a long time for a diesel to sit outside in the elements on a sub-zero temperature day. I drive my X daily in the winter time and also travel to North Dakota quite often (in-laws live there). My X spends the better part of the day outside during the work week and will spend all weekend outside when I travel to ND. I find that if it is started once or more per day, it starts much easier even during the coldest temps while not plugged in. When my X was new, I plugged it in all the time. In the past 4 years, I haven't plugged it in once and it starts fine every time. I'm still on the original set of batteries, too.
I would say a 30-hour interval is fine if the temps don't get any lower than 10 degrees F.
Sub-zero temps you should definitely have it starting more than one time per day. This is when the PSD struggles the most to start...from my experience/memory.
Hope that helps.

Thank you Eric, got a lot of insight from the article you wrote and your responses...
I feel a little more confident now that my questions have answers

Thanks for the replies. There's no wallyworld around here but I'll try walmart for that powerservice.
