That's kouwell that you got that...

I just ran an errand and while out did look under mine...
front end looks exactly the same as my 03 4x4
and there is no rear sway bar !

So I guess I heard right at least on mine

but again - it rides 100% betta thant he 03 did with upgraded rancho 9000's !

My 05 Excursion is a 4x2 and I see a huge coil spring that the Ford Mechanic pointed out to me. I do believe that your 4x4 has leaf springs as your picture shows.

This dealership was not the dealership trying to sell me anything. The mechanic took the time to discuss some modifications that Ford did to the front of the 05's. I am not claiming a major overhaul.

He had nothing to sell me and I was not buying anything. He just was talking 'shop' with me.

David,

All 4x2 Excursions (years 2000-2005) have coil springs -- this was nothing new for 2005. I read your post as if the mechanic was suggesting this was a new feature of the '05s. It certainly is for the SuperDuties (coil springs on 4x4 models), but not Excursions. When he says the "front end is changed," cosmetically yes, but not mechanically. That's all I was trying to point out.

I understand!!.

He did tell me he just bought a 2005 superduty 250, maybe that is what he was talking about when he mentioned that. I never claimed to be technical !

thank for clearing this up.

Sorry for being a little late on this topic, but here is what I can offer from first hand experience with having super springs on my truck. I just got back from a 600 mile trip towing my 6,000lb race car trailer with an approximate tongue weight of 650 lbs and I use a Reese weight distributing/sway control hitch set-up.

First off, the rear of my 05 Excursion sits about 2 inches highers. My stock ride height with a full tank of fuel was 23" from the center of the wheel to the bottom of the fender. After installing the super springs my new dimension was 25.25". The total install time was exactly what they claim, about 45 minutes and that includes lifting and lowering the rear end. I didn't even have to take the rear wheels off to install the springs. The best part is you can buy the springs at any NAPA store, I have the part number if needed.

Without the springs, the Excursion use-to feel like the nose would "bounce" whenever you went over a dip in the road and the rear of truck would love to wander down the highway. With the super springs, neither of these two issues happens.

As far as rear sway bars, I just replaced my factory 24mm bar with a factory 30mm bar and it made a noticable improvement in the sway of the vehicle (feeling of leaning over). My factory 24mm is for sale if anyone is interested. I can't imagine what an Excursion without a rear bar must feel like. It seems that the rear bar came on models equipped with the towing package, just look under the truck and you will either see ir or not (it is not hidden).

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Chris,

thanks that was helpful.. Be aware there is an issue with the Superspring damaging the A/C lines on the passenger side. I confirmed this with the tech support at the company. They told me of at least 3 people that have called in to complain about the product crimping the A/C lines when the superspring was engaged on a large bump in the road.

After doing some research on the Roadmaster suspension, I think I am going to just have the Rancho Add a Leaf put in. I liked the stiff ride when I had the 3/4 ton suburban.

BTW, is yours a 4x4.? I have the HD tow package on my 4x2 and do NOT have the sway bar.

David,

I just saw this thread and will share my experience as well. I have a 2004 Excursion 4X4 PSD and tow an Arctic Fox 32D which is even heavier than your Sunnybrook. I also have a Hensley Arrow hitch (which I love).

Our trailer is very tongue heavy at 1200 lbs and caused the same rear end sag that you are experiencing. The first thing that I did was add a Hellwig rear sway bar to improve handling and a set of Hellwig add a leaf helper spring to the rear. Replacing the factory sway bar with the Hellwig definitely improved the handling off the Ex and I would recommend it. The helper spring however I was disappointed as it reduced the rear end sag but did not eliminate it. Even with the helper spring the front end felt light and sloppy.

I finally decided to go with air springs and bought a set of Firestones. The difference the air bags made was like day and night. I pump them up to 60 psi when towing and the sag is eliminated and no more of that light front end feeling or porposing bounce when traveling on concrete highways. When I'm not towing I drop the pressure down to around 10 psi and the ride quality is just as good as it was before I added them.

"Bob,

thanks, that is very helpful info. I looked at the supersprings, roadmaster, bags, timbrens. After all this, yesterday I had the allroad shop put in the Rancho Add-A Leaf. Add a leaf adds 500lbs capacity

I have not hitched up yet, but already like the way it drives, like the way it looks (2" rear higher)

I called a total of 5 places, told them wanted simple and effective, no maintenace and all said Add a Leaf. They told me the added stiffness would also help the rear end issues, although as of now I have no complaints about how it rides. (I had the VERY stiff 3/4 ton suburban big block engine and loved that ride). .

will hitch up this weekend for a test and will let you'll know if it worked!!

BTW, I do not see a factory sway bar on my 4x2.. Is there supposed to be or is it only on the 4x4???

For those interested.. follow up to 3" Sag in Rear when hitched:

Rancho Add-a Leaf worked perfectly.

Gained 2 " with the add a leaf unhitched..... Went level when hitched without weight distribution..

With weight distrubution engaged, went back to pre-hitched heights of 2 " up in rear.

I have an '05 Limited 4x4 w/ the tow package, it does have a swaybar.
Im still thinking about airbags so I can get my cushy ride when not towing.

Tantrum, I'm not that far from you (Somerset County). I just installed a set of the Air Ride's
in my 05 LumberWagon. No noticeable change to the ride when they are on 5psi as recommended. I just put a set of Bilsteins in which firmed up the ride a bit, it's not harsh. Still not happy with the rear stability. I should have the 30mm sway bar in my hands by next weekend along with a 1" helper spring that is going to replace the snubber bar - I'm going to be installing Landyot's radius arms and this way I won't have to cut the snubber out.
