Depending on what (if anything) breaks, they can void your warranty at the sight of a chip. This happened to me when my transmission died at 87,000 miles. If you run a chip, you should remove it prior to taking it into the dealer for any warranty-related service.

Welcome Strummer.... Heed what E. says..... he knows of what he speaks

the RAGE recently has been the SCT XCal2....
but they are having issues with the strategy of the PCM on the Ex's....
I've had 4 people try to program it (including SCT) and while it is getting closer, it's been a battle to do the custom programming

good luck and ensure you find one that has a proven record on the 05's !!!

(and not just from the dealers words )

I understand that once you install a chip the dealer can tell from the onboard comp.

That is untrue. Data logging for aftermarket chips & tuners is not possible on today's PCMs. Not to say that it won't be in the near future.

When I had a problem, The dealer said they read codes and knew Ihad flashed the ECM. On the warranty issue. By Federal law they can't void warranty because the mod. is present. If your mod caused the warranted part to fail, you pay for the repair. This is still not a legal reason to void warranty. The Magnuson-Moss warranty act states clearly that manufactures and dealers can not make a warranty conditional. I am in a battle now with Ford. The BBB and the Attorney General are in with me at this point. If anything at all, I just want the permanet record at Ford removed.

I may be wrong here, but I was told that if a chip is installed, it must be inserted through a wax seal and therefore when you remove it they will see the punch marks.

I don't know of a wax seal. My truck had a tape across the plastic cover on the back end. Its easyer to clean the material off the contacts if you pull the ECM out and take the cover off. They look for signs like this to say you tampered with it. Then they say your warranty is void. That is one item and has no bearing on the rest of the engine. This is where I get on edge. The Federal law states that no warranty can be made conditional. If the owner wishes to make mods to his vehicle, it is legal. If the dealer can "prove" that your mod. caused the warranted part to fail. Then they are not requiered to cover any cost for 'that" repair. The presents of a mod. itself doesn't void the warranty. That is how the law reads. Trying to enforce this is a little more difficult. Ford has a independant arbitrator thru the BBB. I am waiting for my hearing date now. You need to be firm with the dealer when you check in. You don't want them to "tag"your vin. in Fords permanet records. That is one of my points I want to force at the hearing.+

Hopefully you have better luck than others. And just to set the record straight even SEMA has had to come out and say that the Magnuson-Moss warranty act does not apply to chips and such. It was written to protect consumers from being forced to purchase replacement parts from the car manufacturer not performance parts. I would love for someone to actually read the act and show me were it says that Ford can't deny your warranty for putting in a performance enhancing chip. On another note I have yet to meet anyone who owns a modded ford truck with the money to take Ford to court and win. Not trying to be a prick or anything but this is the info I have been able to put together over the years. Just my $.02

Yes there are alot of holes in the magnuson-moss act. In comparing the Federal text with the SEMA text, It seams to have more read into it. I have know this for some time now. I got hyped by what SEMA presented in laymans terms. I have changed my direction a bit.. I didn't know anthing about a chip install and have never done one. My point is that I was charged for a computer that wasn't nesessary. The vehicle did the same thing as before. It was only the cam sensor. Guys like you provided this info after I put out a call for help. Forum members unanamosly said it was the cam sensor. I told the dealer that and they said those guys are just guessing, we have tested all the componets. Just like they test drove it for an hour and my trip meter still said 0. I see a incomonet coverup. Many people have told me on the forums that most dealers can't figuer it out. My invoice says no signal between the ECM and IDM. DUH without a signal from the cam sensor, The ECM doesn't know the engine is turning. My other gripe on the coverup theme is the refusal of the dealer to alowe me the opertunity to get a second opinion on the ECM.
