Last week I pulled a 28' toy hauler behind my '00 V-10 to spend Thanksgiving at Buttercup Valley, CA. It was a short haul, about 30 miles. I believe the total weight of the hauler with 100 gallons of water, two quads, lifted golf cart, and 25 gallons of gas to be in the 8000 pound range. When I was accelerating to get onto the Interstate, my engine sound like a blender with rocks in it. It took quite a while to get to highway speed and when I got there the truck seemed very labored to keep up. After returning the toy hauler, I noticed a *bump* in the rear end when taking off from a stop. And later, I noticed the rear end shuddered when I made a tight, low speed turn in a parking lot. My X has just turned over 150K miles and I know that things will wear. I've read in other forums that the Ford Posi Traction units are basically junk and am concerned that it may be on it's way out. What about the rattle in the engine while accelerating? Worn valves? Something worse? |

Regarding the rearend -- I was originally going to suggest u-joints until you mentioned hearing sounds while turning in a tight circle. Typically the clutch packs wear out in a posi and it simply stops working. I just rolled over 160K on my X and don't have any shuttering sounds from the rear. I changed rearend fluid several thousand miles ago, perhaps you should do the same and inspect what's up behind the differential cover? Just a thought, if you haven't already. The procedure is very straightforward. Otherwise, I would definitely suspect the u-joints. You will typically hear a clunk sound when starting from a dead stop and shifting from forward-to-reverse, and vice versa.
As for the "blender with rocks in it" sound -- I had to laugh at that description, but I really don't know what would be the cause. How's power while driving the X without the trailer attached? Normal? Decreased? I wonder if it's not the engine and instead the transmission or torque converter? Did you spew any tranny fluid or is your tranny fluid low?

While driving around town tonight I noticed the bump and shuddering was gone. I'll check the fluid tomorrow. Any suggestions on type? I'm planning on purchasing a similar toy hauler sometime next year. Would I benefit from swapping my 3.73's for 4.30's? Also, where we would be doing most of our camping, there is soft sand. Would an aftermarket Posi or Limited slip, such as the PowerTrax, be worth the expense?
As for the engine...at lower speeds it has plenty of punch. I did notice the rocks in blender sound when accelerating from 50 to about 60 mph but it wasn't nearly as bad as when I was towing. The power seems OK, it's just the sound that bothers me. It can't be good. I started using plus grade gasoline about 400 miles ago. The sound is less prevalant but still there. Trans fluid is fine, oil level is fine, no leaks or spewing (sorry, that emoticon cracks me up!). |

You'll also need the Amsoil Slip Lock additive for the limited slip. They are availalbe from http://www.amsoil.com You would see improved off-the-line performance with 4.30's (it'll get up to the higher RPMs quicker) and a decrease in fuel economy (you'll be driving at higher rpms at highway speeds). This calculator will help you with finding out what your new RPM would be with 4.30's. Keep in mind if you have 4x4, you will need to replace the front gears, too. $$$
http://www.supermotors.org/vehicles/calculators/index.php#finding_rpm (enter .7 for the transmission ratio - stock tires are approximately 30" in diameter, too)

My next guess would be a loose exhaust shield or something that resonates when you hit that certain RPM range between 50 and 60. That's the only sound I would say equates to rocks in a blender...lifter ticks or various other valvetrain noise has a much more repetative nature to it. Rocks in a blender sounds to me like something is loose.

The sound I'm hearing is definitely internal. I already have a heat shield loose...like I said it just turned 150k. It's not really a knock, more like a tick, but louder. Almost like a diesel at just above idle. If I had a microphone on my computer I'd put in a sound byte, that would be so much easier. Anyway, thanks for your input! |

Real Quick...
Stock tires are 31.6"
Overdrive ratio is .72
Okay...
That sound is NEW I take it? The "rocks in a blender" description sounds suspiciously like "FLUTTER". Basically exhaust resonance. Ford redesigned the Y-pipe to something even shittier in subsequent 2V V10's and the FLUTTER was reduced/eliminated. 2000 year V10s are notorious for flutter. I have no idea why it's called 'flutter' when it should be called...well something other than "flutter". Flutter just sounds too girly.
Lack of power:I would first suspect a bad/clogged/needs to be changed fuel filter. Course you could also have a Coil On Plug (COP) misfiring with heavy loads (like when you're towing).
And it could been something in the tranny...but we won't go there right now. Sounds like it is only when you're towing that you're running into problems.
The clunk when taking off is more than likely the slip yoke on the driveshaft. Some folks have good luck with just dropping the driveshaft and lubing the splines. Just don't use the blue crud that Ford puts on there. I cannot recommend a good grease as I had them change the whole driveshaft on my old 2000 when the clunk started. But any good quality grease SHOULD work but in my mind I am remembering that folks prefer a certain grease that I cannot recall at this moment....getting old sucks....
Also, if you haven't changed the tranny fluid in awhile, I'd say it couldn't hurt to drain it ALL and refill with some new MERCON. NOT MERCON V!

Oh and one more thing...
Get 4.30s no question. Mine go in the 2nd week of December. Out come the 3.73 Open Diff. in goes 4.30 with a traction device to be decided later. My signature over at ford-trucks.com says Getting "ecomony" gears is like getting a Diet Coke with your Whopper meal. Compared to an Accord, our mileage sucks. But with 4.30s you can drag 3 of them behind you.
Bottom line is don't fret the loss (if any) in MPG. Most don't lose anything overall since gains are made in towing. (Less shifting)
Plus, you didn't buy that big truck and worry about a measly penny (if that) difference per mile dijya? NO! You bought it drag a freaking house behind you!!! Or anything else you want to...well up to 11K....So, you gotta remember that V10s like to rev. The sweet spot is 2500!

Monsta, curious why not use Mercon V? The new specs from Ford now say it is ok to use where Mercon was used. It is now compatible and is a better fluid since it is in the semi synthetic range. Maybe not for a 2000? Not sure when the cutover was allowed. |

FYI...I dug into this and Ford TSB# 06-14-4 defines MERCON ATF IS BEING REPLACED BY MERCON V ATF AS A SERVICE FLUID. I changed my 4R100 over with Mercon V 10K ago and so far, all is good. This TSB covers the 2000 to 2005 Excursion
