After 9 years at my current employer and living nearly all of my life in Minnesota, my wife and I are making a big move out to Greensboro, North Carolina. I've accepted a job offer out there and will be starting there after the first of the year. This will be a huge change for us but we are excited!
In celebration, we are selling the wife's Cavalier and are going to make the Galaxie a daily driver. The Galaxie is having an AOD transmission (with FE adapter plate for the 390) installed, new rear gears and posi, and an engine overhaul done over the next couple weeks. Since it's still winter up here in MN, I'm having the Galaxie shipped out to NC where I will cruise to/from the office in style and with a huge smile on my face. I may have a few other odds and ends done to it while it's in the shop over the next few weeks and when it's all done, I'm going to have it dyno'd to see how she does. I can't wait!

Hey Eric,
Good luck with the move. Hope everything goes well with the transition. Beautiful country out there. Hope you are a basketball fan with so many teams from the ACC not too far away. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

It seems that whenever there are threads about personal "life" events that I can relate to, I end up talking about myself. It always seems so selfish and self-centered. So, don't take this as just me wanting to talk about myself. I made huge move three years ago when I moved from MA (my wife's homestate) back to Hawaii (my home state). I know how you feel as it was scary but EXCITING all at the same time. I love to move and have moved 4 times in the past three years just since I moved to Hawaii!! Funny thing is, I got out of the Army after 14 years because I didn't want my kids to have to move around all the time. Have fun Eric! Enjoy every moment! Don't stress and make sure you throw a bunch of stuff away! Believe me...you'll accumulate more!

Don't stress and make sure you throw a bunch of stuff away! Believe me...you'll accumulate more! | I remember when you posted on the board prior to that move! Thanks for the vote of confidence. The move for me is a big change both personally and professionally. My wife and I don't know anybody out there and are leaving friends and family that are close. With e-mail and webcams, we'll be able to stay in touch much more frequently than in years past.
Professionally, for both of us, it opens up a lot of possibilities that we did not see happening here in MN (at least in the immediate future). Not having kids or any other commitments in MN, it made sense for us to give it a shot. I'm going from a small business environment to a big corporate environment, which I am interested in experiencing. My wife will be going from working behind a desk in a corporate environment to being a police officer.
The most stressful part of it all is getting our current house ready to sell and dealing with the move, temporary living, and the purchase of a new home all in the next 90 days. I just keep reminding myself that I will look back on this some day and laugh! As for throwing things out -- that's item #1 on our "to do" list this week!

sometimes corporate america is hurry up and wait - don't release too much too soon but it does give you time to coast sometimes !!!

It'll help you decide where to settle by allowing you to learn the "lay of the land". That's one of the reasons I moved so much at first. I wanted to see exactly where I wanted to live so I "tried" the area out first. It turned out to be a wise choice for us.

The biggest problem is that our 100-lb German Shepherd presents a problem in most rental homes. Still trying to locate a place that allows pets of this size -- then we'll wait to see what the additional costs will be for allowing him to tear up the rental property.

Egg-xactly what I did when we sold our house faster than the new one was built...
found a rental house - $300 pet deposit and no extra rent...
then had a fenced yard for the dog to run around in....
another positive is that we used the houses storage instead of renting a storage location or two or three I also used one of those storage boxes to go for the stuff that wouldn't fit....
they deliverd the box, I loaded it once, they picked it up and stored it,
then delivered to the new house and I unloaded it....
otherwise it would have been load, unload at storage building,
then load again and unload at new house - NOT my idea of fun

Eric I was thinking of you as I was driving today. One of the things I actually LIKE about moving (certainly NOT the actual moving part) but the renewal that can happen in your life.
With the New Year approaching I've never been one for "New year's Resolutions". Mainly because the next day I'm still where I was before. But moving can give you the option to make huge changes in your life, if you want. It's kinda hard to explain but it always made me feel good to start off fresh.
Now a confession: I wanted a more simple life with very simple things when I made my decision to relocate. This was a BIG "selling" point I made to my wife. One of the things I looked forward to about moving back home was a desire to not accumulate so much STUFF. I wanted family time on the beach, exploring the island etc. to be the main things in our life and not to be consumed with internet message boards, desires for new trucks and the inevitable modifications and add-ons that go with owning new trucks, no need for fancy electronics, motorcycles, pets & going out to eat.
Now I made those first two things huge priorities but I still have new trucks. Newer than I've ever owned. I have 5 motorcycles, just bought my wife a 42" plasma TV for Christmas, have 3 dogs, 3 horses and a worthless (aren't they all) cat. And I still find myself "addicted" to this forum and FTE (pushing 10K posts over there!) and I have more SHIT now than I did before I moved. Oh well...at least I can go to the beach.

Just spent the last 6 hours on the first evening of many of getting the house ready for selling. I discovered an interesting item in the relocation package -- houses cannot be put on the market or sold with any contingencies with this relocation company. We have $16K in storm damage from a September '05 hail storm that came through our area. This buys me an extra month (or so) before the work is completed. We are now contemplating finishing off the lower level of our home to create 2 more bedrooms and an additional family room.
The last thing I want to do is dump more money into a house we are going to turn around and sell as soon as the work is done, but it could end up being the quickest way to double or triple our investment in 1-2 months. We will probably take the plunge, but it's something we're still contemplating as we figure out the timing on this whole move thing.
Regarding the starting fresh thing -- I find the timing to be perfect for us and couldn't agree with your viewpoint more. New year, new job, new state, new home/mortgage -- it doesn't get much fresher than that! I too look forward to spending more time with my wife, our dog, and being able to travel to the beaches which we will now be within a couple hours of. The travel opportunities in NC and the surrounding areas are much more our to our liking, particularly with most of them being year-round options. In MN, you have a window of May-September and then it begins to get too cold to do much outdoors. I've never minded it before (it's all I know, really), so it will be a welcome change.
The amount of junk we were able to throw away in 6 hours tonight was unreal. We haven't even touched our storage areas yet. Your post made me laugh -- wanting to spend more time away from message forums? That's blasphemy!
