Okay guys,

I figured I would come to you with this one. My wife has been complaining (it is her X) about the X blowing black smoke. But, I told her that with a Diesel this is normal. Well, I drove it to work the other day and I decided to see what it was doing. I found that in order to get it to smoke you really had to romp on it......aka be in a big hurry to accelerate. Even brisk acceleration didn't produce smoke. So, I think that this is the normal diesel operation.....

Any comments?!?!? Any "well, it might be..."?!?!

Thanks guys

6L,
I have the 7.3, and when I really romp on the pedal it will spew a big cloud of black smoke. To get mine to do this I have to put the pedal to the floor and hold it there! This is something that I do not do very often. Especially after zeroing out the mileage meter and punching it read 0.4 MPG, @ $285 per gallon I do not want to waste that much fuel just for a short burst of take off speed.

Now there is a very big plus to this (in my humble opinion) just last week with the wife and kids in the truck we were audibly accosted buy some VERY VULGER rap spewing from a car with their windows down on my passenger side. I could CLEARLY hear it with my windows up!
I gave them a BIG SPEW of black diesel smoke causing them to roll up their windows, and received a big thumbs up from the car that was behind me that was also laden with family vacationers!

Regards,

James,

Yes, that is what I noticed too...that you had to have it almost on the floor for the smoke to come out!

6L,

This is pretty typical of a diesel. Sounds like your wife likes to hot rod around town in the X if he's producing black smoke often enough for her to notice!!

Upgrading to a performance exhaust system will lower the amount of smoke exhibited under heavy throttle as the EGT's will be cooler resulting from a cleaner burn.

Might need to add Power Service or Stanadyne to your fuel to clear the injectors which would enable a more complete spray pattern. Just a suggestion

FYI Only time my 05 Ex smokes is when it is "tuned" i.e. with a tuner of some type....
other than that full throttle only smokes when I put it in third gear to start...
(something I use to make sure the doofus to my right
"with his window down and his stereo up"
understands I don't like his choice of music !)

You might check to ensure your air filter isn't clogged, or one of your turbo boots are not loose or cracked and so you're loosing boost...

just to be safe...
