I have now garnered experience in my 2005 EB 6.0PSD 4X4 Excursion over the same ~ 750 mile route which includes hundreds of miles of pavement/freeway and hundreds of off-road miles on sharp-rocky/rutted hard surface and very, very, very deep sand + tire destroying vegetation.
My first trip was on the factory 265/75/16 BFG "Ford Label" tires. They were destroyed and I was fortunate to escape the area with my life and property on my spare tire. Totally unacceptable tires.
After a 4" lift/level and some better shocks I installed "real" BFG tires, 295/75/16 AT KO's. They were "ok" A HUGE step up from the crappy little stock tires, but still too narrow for sand, leading to some major nail-biting and clearance worries.
Worse still, they wore out in less than 20K miles.
So I put these on last Thursday:

I had these installed just the day before leaving for my annual opening day hunt, the same exact route used on the previous two sets of tires.

These turned out to be "the solution". Great ride on the highway, very cushy and smooth. SUPERB handling on severe angles/rocks/"step-ups" etc. Stuff that I had to really puzzle out before I barely lifted or gave a thought to.
The route was worse and the sand deeper than ever, and thank goodness for the bigger footprint! I had no issues as before, and a great time relaxing with these tires under me.
Hopefully the fact that I have the weight and cornering/braking forces distributed over more square inches of rubber will mean that they will wear much better. If not, oh well, these are THE tires for my needs.

three more desert runs and a couple thousand miles later and these tires are making me smile 
Had 'em over 100 mph now for many miles, and in eXTREME high winds, rock solid!
And off-road no comparison.
No issues rubbing, except a slight bit at absolute full-lock.
