here's some other ways to go when replacing the alt. I've worked with a few of these brands with great results. I have a few more when i find the links I'll post them up.
http://www.excessiveamperage.com/ http://www.ohiogen.com/ http://www.h-o-alternators.com/ On a side note, If you run bigger wire from the alt to the battery and replace the ground for a bigger one you alt will work better for longer. The 6 gauage wire that comes off the alt sucks. IMO

I swapped the alternator in my Ex in a record 11 minutes a few days ago - including gnawing off the connector (that took 4 minutes alone, so I guess it's a record 7 minutes!). The reman'd MotorCraft I had on it began overcharging (pegging the needle at >18 volts) about 50 miles out of Grand Junction, CO on I-70 and I was headed for Idaho, so I stopped at an AutoZone in Provo, Utah, checked out their loaner "serpentine belt removal" kit (a 1/2-inch breaker bar will work, but I didn't have one with me), got out my socket set and set about R/R-ing the alternator - for the third time. The others burned diodes, for some reason, and I suspect this last one had a bad voltage regulator. At any rate, I swear by the lifetime warranty on the Duralast stuff AutoZone sells. Sure, I've had to replace what is arguably more than my fair share of alternators, but it's ridiculously easy, takes no time at all, and still lets me feel like I'm keeping an arm in the engine bay. |
