I have an '03 6.0 powered Excursion, with 40k miles. I just purchased it from the original owner, who was adamant that the computer not be re-booted with Ford software upgrades, insisting it removed/modified features (towing feaures, reduced gas mileage, etc.) and resulted in lower performance. It is not clear to me what the re-booting does to the performance of the 6.0, or what issues it is designed to correct. The symptoms I'm having consists of lack of boost occasionally. I have a boost guage, and every now and then the vehicle seems to have a tremendous lack of power and accelleration, almost as if it is stuck in a taller gear. As I keep my foot in the throttle rpm gradually build, and then the boost shoots up, and accelleration is normal. Also, there is a surging, hunting at steady throttle conditions (cruise) on the highway. Shutting off and restarting the engine seems to cure this condition until it occasionally pops up again...Any thoughts?

I don't what the guy was saying about rebooting but it sounds like he was trying to describe "re-flashing" which is something Ford occasionally has to perform on the 6.0L engines to correct fuel flow, timing, etc.

The previous owner probably had a high performance chip installed or a programmer loaded at one time.

The run ability issue sounds like the EGR since they were the first part to get ill in the first year 6.0's(2003 models).

I recommend having a code scanner connected up to the truck to see what diagnostic trouble codes pop up and go from there.

I also notice you're in the Phoenix area( I have folks in Gilbert) and have some friends there that started up a Powerstroke club recently http://www.azpsg.com/ I suggest stopping by there and registering up so you'll have local hands on support, just mention CHPMustang referred ya over(I'm a member too)
